You may know that every year during the rainy season, the city of Jakarta is affected by terrible floods. But what you see may not be the worst of it. Photographer Cynthia Boll (1972) followed the lives of four families living behind the old seawall in Northern Jakarta, where the threat of flooding is the most severe, documenting their personal stories in Utarakan Jakarta: The People Behind the Seawall. The exhibition shows how four citizens and their families are dealing with water related problems, like floods, heavy rainfall, water pollution and lack of clean water and proper sanitation.
The exhibition is part of an integrated multimedia project: an awareness and information campaign about Jakarta sinking. It highlights the people’s perspectives, their struggle with water and their hopes and dreams for the future. Come and see these amazing photos at the amphitheater of the Erasmus Huis, until 13 May.
