We all smell it; a foul stench hangs in the air. Regardless of authorities denying that the haze is back, we’re understandably paranoid after last year’s smoky crisis (PSI readings above 300 are no joke!). No need to declare a state of emergency as of yet, but heck, we’re not taking any chances. Here’s how you can protect yourself against deteriorating air quality in Singapore – but let’s keep our fingers crossed we won’t have to.
What can we do?
- Stay indoors, especially if you suffer from heart and lung diseases.
- Really need to step outside? Wear a mask to keep the particles out. N95 masks, which are said to block out 95% of small particles in the air you breathe, are available at clinics, pharmacies, and major supermarkets.
- Avoid physical activity outdoors if PSI levels are above 100. A reading beyond 100 is considered unhealthy, while one between 50 to 100 is moderate.
- Off with your contact lenses! The particles in the air might cause burning sensations, irritation, and swelling of the top layer of our eyes – contacts might make this worse. Use preservative-free eye lubricants hourly to remove allergens.
- Feeling itchy? Be generous with moisturiser – it helps protect your skin against the nasty stuff in the air.
- If you’re coughing, your airways and lungs might be inflamed. Drink more water and again, stay indoors.
- Keep indoor air clean with air purifiers. Check out our guide to choosing the right one for your home or office.

Take care, folks!
