Welcome to “Sew Ugly,” an exhibition in Room 13 of The Slow featuring new works by Ozzie Wrong, self-proclaimed Z-grade surf rat come sewer rat. As in – likes to sew stitches into fabric on a sewing machine type sewer rat.
“I’ve been sewing since March this year when I saw a machine on sale. I hate robots but I love power tools,” says Ozzie. “I call these things I’m making ‘flags’. Art flags, if you will. I make them as quickly as I can therefore the actual sewing is a mess. They still take ages but I feel like they are worthwhile to make. I love hanging them on the wall, also throwing them on a bed. Sometimes I clip them to the curtains or hang them off the side of a car.”
Ozzie’s artwork is a mix of graffiti, pop-art and manga that has featured in exhibitions and surf stores across the world. Influencing the surf, art and fashion world for over 20 years, Ozzie has an ability to ensemble the kind of colourful, whack creations most only dream of.
“Sew Ugly” marks the second exhibition in Room 13 by the infamous professional surfer, musician, film-maker, and member of punk-rock band, The Goons of Doom.
Ozzie’s first exhibition at The Slow saw the unpredictable artist creating a host of drinks, including the infamous ‘Shit Beer’, which is exclusively available in Bali at The Slow. Other drinks like his Snake Blood and Pigs Vomit will return to The Slow for the launch of his exhibition.
“If you do buy a flag and later regret it, burn your flag. Thank you for coming out to the show. My new motto is ‘sew hard and stay home’. So I’ll never see you again,” concludes Ozzie.
“Sew Ugly” launches in Room 13 Gallery of The Slow from 7pm on Saturday the 24th of August.
