Want to get to know our new Managing Editor, Rachael Wheeler? Here’s what happened when we challenged the British digital guru to take part in Instagram’s latest craze, #20things…
1. I’ve called Singapore home for two years, and share my colourful (who am I kidding – it’s mostly grey and blue) Holland Village apartment with my other half Guy and dog Peggy. They’re the funniest beings I know.
2. Between four and twelve, I told everyone my middle name was Mermaid.
3. I’m a huge freaking geek when it comes to planning. I chose my university degree at 14! I realise how weird that is.
4. I once threw myself off a sea wall to protect the crabs from my brother’s line during a childhood holiday. I then realised crabs were terrifying. Still, I got a new (dry) frock out of it.
5. I started working in digital journalism just before the sonic boom of online publishing. I started helping out the web team at News International for brownie points during my first internship and got really into it. It was perfect timing.
6. I’m a country gal. I grew up in rural Somerset with a social life that centered around the stables. I struggled to feel relaxed in London (getting repeatedly burgled didn’t help).
7. I have a terrible, accidental habit of giving away spoilers.
8. I joined the Daily Mirror’s online showbiz team at 22. I didn’t feel an affinity with celebrity journalism, but it was the fastest way to become an Editor as a young female in the newsroom.
9. Yes, I have met One Direction. No, they didn’t try to fornicate with me. Yes, I was disappointed.
10. My fiancé loathes that I loathe cooking. I’m fine with it.
11. I’m pretty badass with a pair of skis or a snowboard.
12. I don’t embarrass easily. I created and presented a daily show called Just Sayin’ at the Mirror. For my first video, I got kicked off the red carpet for interviewing Julia Roberts while adorned with fake armpit hair.
13. I’d wipe out spiders with the press of a button, and wouldn’t give a sh*t about the impact on Mother Nature.
14. Moving to Singapore liberated me from showbiz, and enabled me to specialise in the growth of all-round digital content in Southeast Asia.
15. I ran my first marathon last year. The high that makes it all feel worth it is… elusive.
16. I got engaged while scuba diving off the Gili Islands in February. I’ve already booked 90 per cent of the wedding (Sri Lanka, March 2016). My fiancé is both relieved and frightened by this.
17. I couldn’t tell you my favourite food, band, flower, designer, hotel or movie. I like little bits of everything.
18. I first spoke to Chris about joining The Honeycombers 18 months ago, and we’ve been eyeballing each other since. The right time came for me to lead the editorial team in March this year, and we’ve got some pretty mind-blowing projects and targets laid out. (Read; watch this space.)
19. I once broke my foot while dancing in my own living room.
20. One of the many highlights of working at The Honeycombers is being the token office Brit. Holy *&^%*s, am I going to teach these gals about swearing.
