More new ramen? And an old famous Russian restaurant coming back? This week is already looking pretty hot for the foodies. Oh, but we can’t forget the completely uncool things that happened this week as well, like Kanye West practically begging Mark Zuckerberg for a billion dollars, Rebecca Lim’s awful PR stunt, and of local band, Tacit Aria, being dropped as opening act for Funeral for a Friend.

Ramen Keisuke has a new lobster ramen outlet
Fancy a bit of nosh after a night of revelry? This swish new ramen joint – brought to you by the senseis behind Tonkotsu King and Tori King – is located right in the heart of Clarke Quay and open ’til 5am! Perch yourself over a flavourful bowl of umami-laden lobster broth ramen and give those club feet a rest. If you’ve really worked up a mighty hunger, fuel up on sides like the tender beef tataki and pork gyoza.

The Russian return of Shashlik
Long an icon of Russo-Hainanese cuisine in Singapore, Shashlik’s closure late last year was cause for mourning for fans of its signature borsch soup and steaks. If you have fond memories of the establishment’s bowtie-donning wait staff and tableside theatrics (especially the fiery preparation of the baked Alaska!), you’ll be happy to know that Shashlik will be reopening later in March. The new owners are sons of one of the restaurant’s longstanding waiters and have re-hired eight of the restaurant’s original staff.

Car Free Sunday in the CBD
Leave the car keys at home and slip on a pair of trainers instead for Singapore’s first car free Sunday. The event sees Connaught Drive, Saint Andrew’s Road, Anderson Bridge and part of Raffles Avenue closed to motorists. There will be a slew of events to look forward to like fitness group exercises, outdoor yoga, food trucks and, of course, visitors are free to jog and cycle on the closed roads. The novel initiative is set to take place every last Sunday of the month from 7am to 9am.
Changi Prison gazetted as national monument
While SG50 might have had us looking towards the future, it’s important not to forget our past, even the darker parts of it. The National Heritage Board announced on Total Defence Day that Changi Prison’s entrance gate, wall, and turrets have been gazetted as Singapore’s 72nd national monument. The prison, once Singapore’s main POW camp during the Japanese Occupation, and headquarters of the vicious Kempeitei (Japanese secret police) will serve as a reminder of the atrocities of the Second World War.

An MRT line that threatens to tarnish local flora and fauna
Despite Singapore being but a speck on the map, we’re lucky to have thriving nature reserves like Bukit Timah, Central Catchment Nature Reserve and Macritchie Reservoir Park. Unfortunately, current plans for the new Cross Island Line go right under these two reserves, potentially putting the parks environment and wildlife at risk. The new route isn’t confirmed, but the Land Transport Authority and Nature Society Singapore are in talks about potentially changing the alignment of the line. Not to mention, do we really need another MRT line?
A slider with the ID of 445 doesn't exist.Kanye West begs Mark Zuckerberg for money
Need more proof of Kanye West’s God complex? The rapper took to Twitter and unleashed a slew of bizarre tweets asking Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, to invest one billion in “Kanye West Ideas”. He also went on to claim that he was Zuckerberg’s favourite artist and that he was this generation’s Disney. It comes as no surprise that Zuckerberg hasn’t responded. Maybe he should have reached out to Facebook’s founder on a more appropriate platform… Like Facebook?
Local band denied opening for Funeral for A Friend
We’re all about supporting local, so we’re sorely disappointed at LAMC’s decision to remove Tacit Aria as the opening act for Funeral for a Friend. The local band had previously won a competition to open at the Funeral for a Friend concert, but was taken off the line-up due to “unforeseen circumstances”. Though LAMC posted a Facebook update acknowledging the band’s performance, that hardly makes up for the hours spent practising for a gig like this. Not cool at all.
Rebecca Lim’s PR stunt gone awfully wrong
A sincere apology to her fans might have spared Rebecca Lim from the deluge of criticism following the news that her ‘retirement’ announcement was actually a publicity stunt for insurance company NTUC Income. The Mediacorp star stopped short of apologising and instead claimed that her post was “misinterpreted or misunderstood”. Seriously? How could anyone misinterpret or misunderstand “Yes, I am retiring”?
