Take a breather from pineapple tarts and impromptu Chinese New Year (CNY) interrogations; let us bring you up to speed on this week’s hottest happenings. Oh, but let’s not forget about that poor soul who paid $20 for nasi lemak on the first day of CNY and those awkward MRT pregnancy ads.

Menya Takeichi Ramen comes to Singapore
If you’re anything like us, you love gulping down a hearty, flavourful bowl of ramen. So get ready to slurp and burp; Menya Takeichi, Tokyo‘s top chicken ramen chain, has finally made its way to Singapore! The coveted dish features a creamy, collagen-rich broth made by simmering fresh chicken low and slow for hours, with springy ribbons of al dente ramen tossed in. If you fancy something lighter, Menya Takeichi also offers a clear soup alternative – made from umami-laden bonito flakes. The restaurant is the fifth offering at Suntec City’s Eat At Seven dining concept within the Sky Garden.

Singapore gets destroyed in the Independence Day: Resurgence trailer
Now you’re probably wondering why Singapore getting trashed by aliens is hot, but it kinda is in terms of our Little Red Dot’s global presence. After all, it’s a sure sign that your city is globally relevant when Hollywood decides to blow it up right? But here’s hoping we get featured in a movie where we don’t get utterly decimated in the near future.
Deadpool: A comic book movie where the world isn’t going to end
On the topic of cities getting completely destroyed, aren’t you a little sick of the the-world-will-end-if-you-don’t-do-something-about it trope that’s the bread and butter of every superhero movie? The long awaited Deadpool movie swaps that overdone storyline for the, well, equally clichéd save-the-damsel-in-distress plot. Fortunately for us, Deadpool makes up for that by being a superhero quite unlike any other. Self-referential, irreverent and possessing a never-ending inventory of snarky one-liners, Deadpool will prove quite a breath of fresh air to any seasoned comic book movie fan.
Kanye’s TLOP contest becomes hilarious
So Help Me God, SWISH, WAVES and now The Life of Pablo? When Kanye first announced a prize for anyone who could decipher his new album’s name using only the acronym TLOP, twitter went crazy. With as many detractors as fans, twitter users seized the opportunity and posted hilarious responses. “The Last One, Promise”, “Total Lack of Professionalism” and “The Love of Pizza” are just some of our favourites.
LEW’s new music video
Singer songwriter, Lewis Loh, better known by his stage name LEW, just released the music video for his new single Two. The charming video stars Mabel Yap from popular Youtube channel Butterworks and Lewis himself going through the ups and downs of a relationship. If Valentine’s Day’s got you feeling lonely, this might just warm your heart a little. #supportlocal!

Fertility campaign by I Love Children
In addition to a name that begs to be misinterpreted, we think we speak for most people when we say that nobody likes to be told what to do with their genitalia. The ads, which have appeared on trains, feature cartoon sperm and eggs along with slogans like “The seed is in place for a perfect landing” and “Row together as one boat”. Now that’s a little too intrusive an ad for our morning commute, don’t you think?
Chow Chow Pandas
Three panda-coloured Chow Chows with dyed fur have been making quite a stir at Orchard Road the past week, with throngs of passers-by huddling around to grab photos. The owners have since started a service offering photo shoots with the dogs, raising concerns about the animals’ welfare. While the owner’s may revel in the attention, it’s hard to tell for sure if a dog would find all that attention stressful. Besides, since when did dogs need to dye their hair to look adorable?

A compilation of Chinese New Years “microaggressions” compiled by a Singaporean Reddit user went viral last week featuring some positively groan-worthy remarks by relatives. Anyone who’s celebrated Chinese New Year will tell you how much a pain these questions can be, but we can’t help but laugh at a few of them. Here’s our favourite one on the list: “I heard your cousin’s boyfriend studied design. In the end, he become an ang bao designer!”.
$20 Nasi Lemak
When cash is a little tight, we’ve always got cheap and cheerful plates of mixed rice to fill up on. Unfortunately, even this pocket-friendly staple can burn a hole in your wallet during Chinese New Year, thanks to the ‘festive’ surcharge. An unlucky patron ordering a mixed rice dish ended up paying about $20 at Vivo City’s Food Republic. While she might have ordered six sides, far more than most people do, $20 is a ridiculous amount to pay for food court fare. We can do loads better for $10!
