It’s hard to beat our very own Changi Airport when it comes to world class travel standards, but Zurich Airport in Switzerland holds its own pretty darn well
One of the many things we love about Singapore is having a world class airport in our very own backyard, making travel from this sunny island heaps easier. Yes, we’re spoiled here. But what happens when we make the long haul across the globe, only to transit at an airport that has only the bare necessities? For those travelling to central Europe, Zurich Airport offers the best creature comforts you can expect from one that’s ranked No.9 in SkyTrax’s World’s Top 100 Airports – here are our top five reasons why it’s our new favourite airport.
Zip to the city centre right after arrival
Yes, you heard that right. Zurich Airport is a mere 10km from the city centre, so you don’t have to waste another minute travelling. There are a couple of options when it comes to getting around; you can hop on a tram to Zurich or choose to travel by bus or train to the city and other parts of the region. Zurich Airport has about 350 rail connections and over 700 bus and 400 tram departures a day. Talk about being well-connected!
Shopaholics, get your credit cards ready
What’s a world class airport without a solid retail arm? Zurich Airport has 64 different lifestyle choices and services at the Airside Center. Located in the passenger zone, you’ll find pharmacies and designer boutiques like Hermès, to duty-free stores and even a gym. Heads up for those who are indulging in duty-free shopping: Zurich Airport allows travellers to pre-order their purchases online between 30 days and 72 hours ahead of arrival or departure there. Even better, you can pay for your items upon collection.

Fuel up when you land
So the thought of airplane food makes you cringe – well, you can always work up that appetite when you land. The Airside Center also houses a good variety of cafes and restaurants. Craving sushi, dim sum or pasta? Or would you rather treat yourself to the best of Swiss cuisine? With crowd favourites like Lindt Boutique and Marchè, Zurich Airport has got it all. If you need a little liquid courage before your flight, the airport’s selection of bars offers casual dining complete with exclusive wine services and live sports broadcasts.

Got time to spare? Then put your voyeuristic hats on
The airport boasts the world’s first observation walkway that lets you watch pilots in the cockpit through multimedia binoculars with the full lowdown on the various points of interest and facts about the aircrafts and flight destinations at Zurich Airport. Don’t forget to bring along your boarding pass on the day of travel to enjoy free entry.

Another great way to explore the airport involves a 75-minute bus tour that brings you behind-the-scenes, past hangars, the maintenance area, the airport apron and the runway intersection. Snag a spot early, as spaces are limited.
Kick back and say ahh…
Zurich Airport prides itself on world class service, and we know that definitely includes a fancy airport lounge. Flying by First Class or Business Class? Lucky you. Hit up one of the various lounges before boarding your flights and level up your experience with the airport’s VIP service that comes with a personal concierge, who will assist with your transit. Aside from a personalised service, you can expect a porter service for your luggage, priority check-in, access to the Zurich Airport VIP lounge and limousine transfer to the aircraft.
Good news for those who have their hands full with kids: Zurich Airport’s Family Services lets you drop the little tykes off in its fully-equipped playrooms at departure areas A and E – there’s nothing like a little breather before a long flight.
