And that\u2019s no understatement; just a few weeks ago, the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/local-music-in-singapore-10-must-hear-albums-from-bands-singers-and-producers-that-made-waves-in-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">local musician&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0single, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Es80qVmI2jY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Sticky Leaves<\/a>\u201d, clinched a spot in Spotify\u2019s Global Viral 50 chart, sharing the acclaimed credentials with the likes of The Beatles, LCD Soundsystem, and even Mot\u00f6rhead. But unlike her <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/interview-are-rock-and-roll-lads-cashew-chemists-the-coolest-cats-in-singapore-music-we-find-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">raucous, rockin\u2019 counterparts<\/a>, \u201cSticky Leaves\u201d melted hearts with its <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/neon-lights-in-singapore-9-fun-facts-about-local-folk-whiz-bennett-bay-honeycombers-one-to-watch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">stripped-down,<\/a> piano-bolstered temperament \u2013 a vulnerable, docile composition that emphasises on this <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/local-musicians-in-singapore-we-chat-with-charlie-lim-the-multi-talented-maestro-at-sing-jazz-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">singer-songwriter\u2019s<\/a> cherubic vocals.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Yet, these euphonious <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/singapore-bands-meet-lost-weekend-the-wild-ones-reppin-local-music-at-the-neon-lights-music-festival\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">indie-pop<\/a> ballads aren\u2019t Linying\u2019s only global claim to fame. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/laneway-singapore-2016-a-colourful-interview-with-riot-n-magenta-champions-of-local-indie-music\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">dulcet, velvety vocals<\/a>\u00a0have struck a chord with so many, that she\u2019s even inadvertently caught the attention of the international music community. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/laneway-singapore-2016-interview-8-reasons-were-intrigued-with-local-electronic-musician-intriguant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Dance producers<\/a> from Germany (Felix Jaehn) and France (Krono) have already approached this young\u2019un for vocal collaborations in deep house, with releases on Spinnin\u2019 Records \u2013 to put this in perspective, this is the same Dutch label associated with Afrojack and Ti\u00ebsto. <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/nightlife-in-singapore-these-dance-music-events-are-our-parties-of-the-month-this-february\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Half-EDM<\/a> vocalist, half-folky songbird \u2013 Linying is clearly on the cusp of a meteoric rise; we catch her for a chat before she becomes a full-fledged superstar.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-wrapper\"><iframe title=\"Linying - Alpine (Audio)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wYbozJG_UOc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<h3><strong>Hey Linying! So while most Singaporeans were toiling through their daily lives, you had broken into the Global Viral 50 on Spotify, sharing top spots with The Beatles. How do you even wrap your head around something like that?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I was quite thrown off! But I\u2019m very happy that it was well reacted to, because it&#8217;s the first of my own songs, and I was apprehensive and nervous before.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>If you were presented with the opportunity to base yourself as a musician overseas, would you totally do it?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I can definitely imagine finding motivation and inspiration in a more musically diverse and mature environment. But I expect that that might interfere with \u2013 and distract from \u2013 the normalcy and banality of everyday life, which is the place from which I experience and write things.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>On the flipside, what are some things in Singapore that are too precious to leave behind?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/hot-new-tables-january-2016-new-restaurants-in-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Food<\/a>. Great street lamps. Happy faces <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/mrt-restaurants-in-singapore-10-cheap-and-convenient-places-to-eat-on-the-train-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">on the MRT<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Food, indeed. But for dim sum, I love going to Hua Ting at Orchard Hotel for dim sum with the family, because it gives me that lazy Sunday late morning feeling, and they have wonderfully inauthentic mango chicken tarts. Swee Choon\u2019s another good one with friends, because it&#8217;s the kind of place you can overeat at.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>You recently spent quite a while in Paris too. Surely, there must\u2019ve been stuff there that sparked your creativity?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Somehow, it just didn&#8217;t work that way for me. I saw many beautiful things, saw people living off ideals, surviving on passion, but it was all too new and dramatic and external to myself. Maybe it was because I didn&#8217;t spend enough time there to begin to find things boring.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Have you ever been insecure about your voice? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Yeah, a little bit. Could you enlighten us on what that song means to you personally?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I think there was a lot of confusion, disillusion and disappointment for me growing out of my teenage years and living life out in such an emotionally volatile way. The song was my way of acknowledging that there are things that you think should be but just aren&#8217;t, and that there is, nevertheless, a worldly, fleshly, impermanent sort of beauty to living that&#8217;s worth seeing even if without understanding.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Spoken like a true lyricist. Speaking of leaves, how much in touch with nature are you? Are you an active outdoors-y person?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>No!!! I&#8217;m deathly afraid of worms and snails, which is why I never, <em>ever<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/hiking-in-singapore-15-essential-walking-trails-to-get-your-trek-on\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">hike in Singapore<\/a>. But it&#8217;s a different story trekking up a majestic mountain on the Italian coast overlooking the Ligurian Sea.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Contrasting against the quieter intimacy within \u201cSticky Leaves\u201d, is the mind-blowing fact that you\u2019re also hot in demand in the dance industry. Do you get swamped with vocal requests all the time? And how do you choose your projects?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Here and there, but I listen to almost everything I&#8217;m sent. I&#8217;ve learnt not to be precious about things like genre and songwriting; my solo work is what I like doing most, of course, because it&#8217;s the style of writing and producing that I find most compelling and intuitive. But I also enjoy writing to dance tracks as much as I enjoy listening to them, so I keep a pretty open mind.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/spinnin-deep\/felix-jaehn-feat-lost-frequencies-linying-eagle-eyes-available-november-3\">https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/spinnin-deep\/felix-jaehn-feat-lost-frequencies-linying-eagle-eyes-available-november-3<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>On the topic of dance music, do you yourself go out to clubs often? <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;m <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/clubs-in-singapore-dance-the-night-away-at-the-citys-hottest-nightlife-spots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">all for clubs<\/a> when I&#8217;m in the mood. It&#8217;s all sneakers, glitter, danceable clothes and getting smashed. But it&#8217;s really not often that I feel like that; most of the time I&#8217;d rather blast EDM on a good pair of speakers and hang out in pyjamas all showered and clean.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>So is that what can we expect from your debut EP then? Pyjama-friendly EDM?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Nah, no dance for this EP.
