This minimalist spot, crowned Asia’s best coffee shop and ranked sixth globally on the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2025 list, truly lives up to its name with intimate corners and counter seats that make you feel right at home. Moving from its previous Jalan Besar location to its current spot at Selegie Road did little to dent its popularity. We dropped by on a Friday afternoon and found the space buzzing – yes, we even had to queue for at least five minutes!

Despite the crowd, the vibe inside remained wonderfully calm. We managed to get a seat at the counter and went for a classic iced white (basic, but it really shows the cafe’s craft!), which was perfectly brewed and beautifully fragrant. (We purposely sipped on it slowly to savour the entire episode.) If you prefer a quieter cafe experience, a chat with the staff revealed a pro tip: Tuesdays are your best bet for a more chill hang. (Insert the Toto song here…) Welcome to Kafe Utu, one of the most unique cafes in Singapore, where you can explore a smorgasbord of exciting flavours. When we stepped into the cafe and lounge, we were immediately in awe of the brick-coloured walls, African decorations, and black and white photographs.

Our recs? Start with the lamb samosas – have them on their own first before dipping into the garlic yoghurt to taste the difference. For a fiery kick, the Mayai Kali delivers just enough spice to keep you on your toes, and its unique flavours will leave you dreaming about it for days. We also fell in love with The Karanga, an iced white coffee with peanut butter mascarpone cream. It’s velvety, nutty, and not acidic, perfect for a mid-morning caffeine kick.

FYI, the staff says Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings are usually the busiest days for them, so if you’re visiting, reservations are the way to go. This Aussie icon has finally hit our shores, and the hype is absolutely real. Our team visited when it first opened, and our inner child (and dessert-loving adult) is still screaming.
