This minimalist haven, recently crowned Asia’s best coffee shop and ranked sixth globally on the World’s 100 Best Coffee Shops 2025 list, truly lives up to its name with intimate corners and counter seats that make you feel right at home. Moving from its previous Jalan Besar location to its current spot at Selegie Road did little to dent its popularity. We dropped by on a Friday afternoon and found the space buzzing – yes, we even had to queue for at least five minutes!

Despite the crowd, the vibe inside remained wonderfully calm. We managed to get a seat at the counter and went for a classic iced white (basic, but it really shows the cafe’s craft!), which was perfectly brewed and beautifully fragrant. (We purposely sipped on it slowly to savour the entire episode.) If you prefer a quieter cafe experience, a chat with the staff revealed a pro tip: Tuesdays are your best bet for a more chill hang. What’s so great about it? It strikes a rare balance: part cosy cafe, part elevated dining spot. With its minimalist shophouse interior and open kitchen views, Caracara delivers a relaxed yet refined experience.

We dropped by for a weekday lunch, and the wagyu open sandwich was a satisfying stunner – loaded with tender beef and layered flavour. Another highlight? The Aurora, a bright grape coffee with a hint of rum, which one colleague couldn’t stop raving about. The sukiyaki donburi and brekky set also left us fully satisfied. This spot serves good food, great vibes, and we’ll definitely be back.

Must-try items: Wagyu open sandwich; sukiyaki; Shibuya toast; Aurora
How much: Lunch from $9; lunch omakase from $98; dinner prix fixe from $138 for two pax
Opening hours: Wednesdays to Mondays, 11am to 10.30pm
Address: 77 Neil Road, Singapore 088903

Visit Caracara Caracara’s menus

3. (Insert the Toto song here…) Welcome to Kafe Utu, one of the most unique cafes in Singapore, where you can explore a smorgasbord of exciting flavours. When we stepped into the cafe and lounge, we were immediately in awe of the brick-coloured walls, African decorations, and black and white photographs.

Our recs? Start with the lamb samosas – have them on their own first before dipping into the garlic yoghurt to taste the difference. For a fiery kick, the Mayai Kali delivers just enough spice to keep you on your toes, and its unique flavours will leave you dreaming about it for days. We also fell in love with The Karanga, an iced white coffee with peanut butter mascarpone cream. It’s velvety, nutty, and not acidic, perfect for a mid-morning caffeine kick.

FYI, the staff says Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings are usually the busiest days for them, so if you’re visiting, reservations are the way to go. Oh, we also noticed there are power sockets on the first level, which means you can pop by, have a meal, and get some work done here.

Must-try items: Lamb samosas; Mayai Kali; Yaba “Wise Chief” burger; Grumpy Cheesecake; The Karanga
How much: From $13
Opening hours: Tuesdays to Sundays, 10am to 4.30pm & 6pm to 11pm
Address: 12 Jiak Chuan Road, Singapore 089265

Visit Kafe Utu Kafe Utu’s menus

4. It’s surprisingly tranquil despite the central location, and is great for solo hangs, work sessions, or just soaking up that unhurried charm. We dropped by after lunch and immediately fell in love with the space. If only we didn’t have to go back to the office!

Our first order of business? Getting the talked-about madeleines. They take about 15 minutes, but they’re worth every second. Buttery, golden, and soft in the middle, the sponge cakes taste like a warm hug from a friend you’ve not met in yonks. The roasted short rib toast divided opinions at our table – beef lovers will enjoy its depth, but it’s the chilli-pickled cucumber that really cuts through the richness. If you’re just popping by for a drink, try the maple sea salt latte. This Aussie icon has finally hit our shores, and the hype is absolutely real. Our team visited when it first opened, and our inner child (and dessert-loving adult) is still screaming. The space is sleek (though a little smaller than we would’ve liked), the staff are sweet, and watching the scoops get pulled from that gleaming gelato bar? Hypnotic.

We tried the pistachio praline (hello, nutty velvet magic!) and the chocolate sorbet, which somehow managed to be both intense and refreshing. But honestly, we say go straight for the Singapore exclusives ‘cos they’re the real stars of the show. The kaya toast gelato is a scene-stealer with actual toast bits, while the teh tarik is frozen local comfort in a cone. And yes, we always get our scoop in its signature charred cone for that caramelised crunch. The scamorza gelato (a smoked cheese flavour) is unexpectedly addictive: salty-sweet and rich, especially when paired with buttermilk waffles. Feeling adventurous? Go for the ube, which is earthy, creamy, and less sweet than you’d think. We recommend swinging by in the evening when it’s cooler out.
