Sri Lanka\u2019s capital city is for many just a day\u2019s stopover on the way to the beach, jungle safari, or tea plantations, but the town has some phenomenal food. Here are the top six Sri Lankan dishes you absolutely must try, according to Sabina Fernandez who\u2019s fresh off the plane.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

1. Baked Crab<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> Crabmeat topped with cheese, served in a crab shell.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> When in Sri Lanka, eat crab. No dude, seriously. I\u2019m not one for being elbow deep in crustacean so I love that this crab is deshelled, tender and tasty. And did I mention covered in cheese? Hello!<\/p>\n

Try it at:<\/strong> The Gallery Cafe<\/a>,\u00a02 Alfred House Road, Off Duplication Road, Kollupitiya, Colombo 3, Sri Lanka.<\/em><\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Egg Hoppers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> Eaten like prata, hemispherical hoppers are made with coconut milk and cooked in a round-bottom pan.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> Crispy on the outside, fluffy and spongy in the middle – like a very awesome thosai without the sourness. Also amazing on its own but the version with an egg cracked in the middle is obviously some epic sh*t.<\/p>\n

Try it at:<\/strong> Palmyrah Restaurant<\/a>,\u00a0Renuka City Hotel, 328 Galle Road, Colombo 3, Sri Lanka.<\/em><\/p>\n

3. Kolakenda<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> A flavourful congee blended with local greens, usually eaten for breakfast.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> It\u2019s got that homey goodness that all good comfort food has – like a hearty chicken soup, but vegetarian. They call it herbal as it\u2019s considered very healthy, but it tastes absolutely nothing like Chinese herbal soups. (I repeat, nothing.)<\/p>\n

Try it at:<\/strong> Ceylon Tea Moments<\/a>,\u00a0Colombo Racecourse 2, Reid Avenue, Colombo 7, Sri Lanka.<\/em><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Buriyani<\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> Spiced white and yellow rice with cashews and raisins, with a curried meat, usually mutton or chicken.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> The best bit about the Ceylonese version is the meat – which is tender and moist – and the sweet chutney on the side.<\/p>\n

5. Rice & Curry<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> Similar to economy rice, this is a huge heap of rice with several curries on top.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> Chilli fans will go wild for Sri Lankan curries, which are an intense white hot somewhere between chilli padi and Szechuan pepper. You choose four or five curries over a mound of rice and crunchtastic papadam. Vegetarian rice & curry is also the bomb.<\/p>\n

Try it at:<\/strong> Mythi<\/a>, 125 Fife Road, Colombo 5, Sri Lanka.<\/em><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Lamprais, DBU<\/strong><\/h3>\n

What it is:<\/strong> Stock-simmered rice, Dutch frikkadels (meatballs), Sri Lankan sweet tangy eggplant and Indonesian belacan (chilli paste) wrapped in a banana leaf. A speciality of the Dutch burgher community.<\/p>\n

Why it\u2019s awesome:<\/strong> Colonialism did really well with this one. Sri Lanka\u2019s Eurasian community (of Portuguese-Dutch-Sri Lankan heritage) had a win with this fusion dish, which is seriously tasty.<\/p>\n
