When one of my best friends was planning her first visit to Japan, one of the first things we did was map out all the halal places to check out together, and we found plenty.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: When looking for halal restaurants in Tokyo, take note that the official certification process in the country is not very stringent. This trendy Indonesian cafe chain is known for its direct-sourced Arabica coffee beans, and has a branch in Tokyo\u2019s Harajuku shopping district. While it doesn\u2019t have an official halal certification, it serves a halal menu, and a prayer room is also available for Muslim guests.<\/p>\n<p>We visited Kopikalyan\u2019s Harajuku location on a weekend during lunch hour, but the place wasn\u2019t too crowded. No shop serves alcohol; all use halal ingredients and condiments, and every location is equipped with a prayer space.<\/p>\n<p>The wagyu beef ramen features premium, halal-certified wagyu beef in miso, shoyu (soy-based), or spicy broth options. Once served, the beef slices are grilled with a blowtorch at the table. Meanwhile, the chicken paitan ramen features creamy and thick broth, and is also customisable with roast chicken portions.<\/p>\n<p>When we visited, the friendly staff gave the store a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Photography: Rachel Teo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Xiaowei Yang is a global brand that has more than 700 outlets worldwide, but what makes this particular outlet in Tokyo special is that it serves halal-certified, authentic Chinese and Mongolian cuisine. Situated right by the JR Shin-Okubo Station, the restaurant is located along a small Islamic avenue that caters to Muslim residents and visitors, featuring many halal grocers, restaurants, and nearby prayer spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Specialising in Mongolian-style shabu-shabu and barbecue, the eatery offers an impressive range of regional Chinese cuisines, including spicy Szechuan mala dishes and Shaanxi biangbiang noodles. The hotpot sets also have options where you can choose up to three types of soup bases, and the shabu-shabu course comes highly recommended by the staff. Halal-certified Chinese restaurants are a rare find in Tokyo, but the food was authentic and flavourful! The portions are also pretty big, so come hungry. The mosque is open to visitors of all faiths, and has a cafe that serves authentic Turkish coffee and traditional-style Turkish teas, alongside Japanese desserts and a range of seasonal Turkish patisseries and confectioneries.<\/p>\n<p>The mosque also has a market that sells a range of fresh and packaged international halal grocery and food items.
