As someone who has explored the area often, I came in confident that I could guess most places we were going to (spoiler: I struggled a little).<\/p>\n<p>After meeting outside Nanyang Old Coffee, we got our seats and started the tour. A smart feature I appreciated is the option to have multiple people join the chat, which allowed us to view the hints and instructions on our phones rather than crowding around one device.<\/p>\n<p>Our first treat was the typical Singaporean breakfast \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/best-kaya-toast-in-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kaya toast<\/a>! Coupled with our choice of coffee, tea, or Milo, we were introduced to our guide, Madam Sampan. As we munched on toast (which was a little skimpy on the filling, but we didn\u2019t mind), we got familiar with the instructions and what to expect, then set off with our kopi bings in hand.<\/p>\n<p>P.S. I won&#8217;t get into the tour&#8217;s nitty-gritty details to avoid spoiling it, so you can experience it for yourself! All the vendors were aware of the tour and knew exactly what to do with little back and forth from us. However, it\u2019s important to note that no reservations are made for your main meals. We didn\u2019t have to wait for tables, but keep in mind that Chinatown can get crowded.<\/p>\n<p>Madam Sampan offered many nuggets of information that we found intriguing, and it kept up our curiosity as we toured Chinatown. Each riddle hints at landmarks or noticeable features within the area, like street art and signage. While it was blazing hot during our walk, we were rewarded with little treats to melt any frustration away.<\/p>\n<p>Every stop was steeped in local heritage. Despite being Singaporean, I learnt a lot of interesting things along the way. Plus, Gourmaze delivers hyper-local flavours. Each snack we tried was a familiar treat that awakened my inner child with a cheer of, \u201cOh, I\u2019ve had this!\u201d. I felt great pleasure playing tourist in my home for a day. To our great surprise (and my absolute excitement), we ended up at one of my favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/dessert-cafes-singapore\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dessert cafes<\/a> in Singapore. The perpetual line out the door is a testament to its popularity, and our visit was no different. But thanks to Gourmaze, we jumped the queue and got our sweet treats before anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>For any newcomers who might find durian intimidating, the beauty of this cafe is its desserts. It transforms the fruit into sweet treats without compromising on the iconic flavour. This way, you won\u2019t be overwhelmed by its powerful aroma!<\/p>\n<p>We tucked into chilled desserts that rounded off our tour on the sweetest note while refreshing us from the long trek. \u201cThis is worth all the walking,\u201d my friends said, and I agreed wholeheartedly.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re not a fan of the flavour, fret not. There\u2019s a non-durian dessert option on the tour that\u2019s just as delicious. Outdoor seats are available and aren\u2019t too close to the durian prep area, so you don\u2019t have to worry about the smell. I was thrilled to meet new brands I would\u2019ve otherwise passed by without a second thought, and discovered new stories, murals, and people along the way.<\/p>\n<p>The clues were challenging, which was fantastic for my competitive crew as they stayed engaged throughout the walk. Luckily, our Saturday was rain-free, but it was sweltering. So pack a portable fan to stay cool throughout the day. Pro tip: come a little hungry because all the little bites can be filling. The big eaters in my group were stuffed and satisfied before we finished our tour!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d say Gourmaze is the perfect activity if you have friends coming to Singapore who want to try as many local flavours as possible. Even though food is meant to be the major focus, it\u2019s also a chance to slow down and notice what\u2019s around. We walked a lot &#8211; at least 6,000 steps!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Try not to eat (too much) before the tour:<\/strong> You might get a little grouchy before making it to your main meal, but my advice is to go hungry. The snacks you get along the trail can be surprisingly filling, and even the big eaters in my group were stuffed before we made it to the last two stops.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Be prepared for all kinds of weather:<\/strong> Having an umbrella is a good idea as most of the trail is unsheltered and Singapore\u2019s weather can be erratic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Start the tour early:<\/strong> I started around 12pm and made it to the main meal by 2pm after getting a little lost. I wouldn\u2019t recommend this for anyone who\u2019s vegetarian, vegan, Muslim, or requires gluten-free food. However, it\u2019s possible Gourmaze may curate special tours to accommodate this, so keep an eye out!<\/p>\n<\/div><h3>How accessible is this tour? Can I do the tour in a wheelchair?<\/h3><div><p>Although most of Singapore\u2019s roads are flat and wheelchair-friendly, this tour isn\u2019t fully accessible. Some parts require you to climb stairs and navigate tight alleyways, which might be challenging for wheelchair users. <\/p>\n<\/div><h3>Do I need a map for this tour?<\/h3><div><p>You won\u2019t need a map as the directions are quite detailed. But if you\u2019re directionally challenged (like me), it\u2019d be good to have a map handy so you can find the exact location in case the riddles are too confusing.<\/p>\n<\/div><h3>Can I join the tour alone, or should I do it with a group?<\/h3><div><p>You\u2019re welcome to do the tour alone, but doing it in a group adds to the thrill! I recommend going in groups no bigger than 4, as the locations can\u2019t accommodate huge gatherings. All you need is WhatsApp and mobile data to go on this tour.
