Meet the very demure, very mindful Peh Gao Coffeeshop, serving up classic Singaporean breakfast offerings. But when the sun sets, out comes Orh Gao Taproom, the slightly less demure but just as delicious version of the brand.

It’s best known for its selection of beer, which changes up every week and doesn’t skimp on variety. I spotted pale ales, lagers, sours, and even a peanut butter stout! The team welcomed me warmly and made some recommendations, even giving me samples of the beers I wanted to try before I committed to an order. I ended up going for a half pint of Red Lagoonies ($20), which tastes fruitier than regular beer!

The food is also nothing to scoff at. The bar menu spotlights Asian flavours, creating some addictive snacks and main dishes that pair perfectly with a crisp glass of beer. The crunchy chicken cartilage ($12) and wanton chips with tofu dip ($11) make ideal accompaniments thanks to their crispy texture and touch of spice through various chilli sauces.

Must-try drink: Beers rotate weekly, ask for a recommendation!
Expect to spend: Beers start from $10; cocktails start from $18; bites start from $11
Opening hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 5pm till late
Address: Orh Gao Taproom, #01-06, Serene Centre, 10 Jalan Serene, Singapore 258748

Centro

Photography: Ashe Liao

Shaw Theatres Lido might just be your next go-to hangout spot in Orchard! Why, you ask? Because it now houses Centro, a dining brand with four concepts. Expect a restaurant (with all dishes under $30), a grab-and-go kiosk, an espresso matcha bar, and a cocktail bar. Being the alcohol fiend I am, I’m here to give you the lowdown of the bar.

I admittedly had low expectations for a cinema’s bar, but Centro impressed me with its well-balanced drinks at shockingly affordable prices. Themed after various elements you can find in the theatre and cinema, each cocktail is under $25. And the best part is you can grab them to-go and bring them into the theatre with you for your movie!

One of my favourite drinks I tried is the Velvet Rope ($24), Centro’s rendition of the revolver cocktail. It’s a spirit-forward drink featuring coconut fat-washed bourbon and a sweet coffee liqueur from White Possum, available exclusively to Centro. I can picture myself nursing this drink all night long as I enjoy my movie, especially as a dessert cocktail. I’d also recommend giving the martinis ($18) a try! From a lychee martini to a Vesper, everything I tried was well-balanced and not overly dry for my palate.

Must-try drink: Velvet Rope; Cinematica; The Vesper
Expect to spend: From $18 per cocktail
Opening hours: Daily, 9.30am to 12am
Address: Centro, Level 6, Shaw Theatres Lido, 350 Orchard Road, Singapore 238868

Trailerbar

Photography: Trailer Bar via Instagram

If you missed the people from Enclave Bar and The Projector, you’re in for a treat! You feel it immediately in the room, where serious technique is softened by comfort and a sense of play. In the meantime, we’re set on trying the Buldak Penicillin, a bold, smoky number built around Korea’s beloved ultra-spicy chicken sauce, lifted with yuzu and peated whisky. The only time we’ll drink beer? When it’s mixed with soju. Luckily, the Iced Somaek transforms the classic beer-and-soju combo into a crisp, refreshing serve topped with shaved soju ice. In contrast, the Dalgona Iced Coffee nods to Korea’s cafe obsession with vodka, gamhongno, rice cream and a crumble of dalgona candy. Cocktails are priced at $23 each. (Review by Nicole Nithiyah, Deputy Editor)

Must-try drink: Buldak Penicillin, Iced Somaek
Expect to spend: From $23 per cocktail
Opening hours: Sunday, Tuesday – Thursday, 6pm-1am, Friday – Saturday, 6pm-2am; closed on Mondays
Address: BOP (Bartenders of Pony), 76 Tras Street, Singapore 079015

New menu: Bar Somma

Photography: Ashe Liao

Bar Somma doubles down on soulful, savoury cocktails with its refreshed menu. The Italian-inspired menu, helmed by bar manager Mel Chavez, is organised into three clear chapters: Aperitivo, Savoury, and Renewed Classics. Aperitivo sets the tone with bright, appetite-awakening builds. The Pine Highball ($28) is quietly arresting, pairing lapsang souchong and infused Monkey 47 with pine soda for something smoky, brisk and grown-up. Meanwhile, The Witch Daiquiri ($22) brings a herbal edge with Angostura rum and Strega.

The Savoury section is where Somma really flexes. These are cocktails for drinkers who like an umami touch with texture and a bit of intrigue. The Amalfi Gimlet ($28) uses celery-infused gin to give the classic a vegetal snap. Amatriciana ($26) is unapologetically indulgent, built on (wait for it!) guanciale-infused vodka and tomato. We’re also eyeing the Martini-adjacent EVOOtini ($26) with layers of EVOO-infused gin and kombu Campari.

Photography: Sayher Heffernan

Renewed Classics is filled with nostalgia faves, filtered through Somma’s Italian lens. Shiok interestingly captures post-spa bliss (not what we’d think) with a soothing sour of gin, sage, sandalwood, lemongrass and lemon, finished with a soft, foamy texture.

Jialat transforms spice-induced regret into comfort, combining tequila, mango, coconut, saffron and lime into a tropical, lassi-like cocktail, while Alamak! is Nutmeg & Clove’s playful response to, “Alamak, so expensive!” Built on gin and layered with pineapple, passion fruit and pomegranate, the drink is extra lush thanks to creamy soursop. Clarified milk gives it a silky finish, while a gentle carbonation keeps things light and dangerously easy to sip.

Finally, Atas is an elegant serve which starts with vodka and unfolds into floral notes of rose and saffron, grounded by the bittersweet depth of coffee and PX sherry.
