Tbh, I wanted to catch the Barbie movie<\/a> just \u2018cos I thought it would be a frivolous watch. A chick flick with pink nostalgia and A-list names? I\u2019d take that after a busy week. Two hours later, I realised I was wrong about the film<\/a>. It lures you in with a superficial plastic doll, then hits you with a sobering dose of real-world conundrums that leave you reeling\u2026<\/p>\n

Checkmate! Reality called<\/h3>\n

Margot Robbie is Stereotypical Barbie, but she\u2019s becoming decidedly less perfect (hello, flat feet and cellulite!). This leads her to the Real World for answers. This is home to mother-daughter duo, Gloria and Sasha (played by America Ferrera and Ariana Greenblatt). Without going into details of the movie\u2019s parallel universe logic, it\u2019s due to Gloria\u2019s sketches of darker versions of Barbie that affected the latter.<\/p>\n

Sorry to break it to you, but the Barbie movie isn\u2019t so \u2018plastic fantastic\u2019 after all. Barbie has a rude awakening in the Real World. She\u2019s met with sexist remarks and even physical harassment on the streets of L.A.. And she soon notices that fair gender representation doesn\u2019t exist in many jobs, not even in the Mattel HQ.<\/p>\n

But wait, there\u2019s more upsetting news. Gloria is a creative but troubled soul who\u2019s stuck in a receptionist job, with a husband that doesn\u2019t pull his weight and an adolescent kid that hates her \u2013 seemingly, a reflection of the typical woman\u2019s reality (*shudder*).<\/p>\n

Un-doing the patriarchy<\/h3>\n

In his \u2018toxic male\u2019 phase, Ryan Gosling\u2019s Ken started brainwashing (or \u2018programming\u2019) all the inhabitants of Barbieland. This turned it into every patriarchal man\u2019s dream. Think: all the Barbies (including the President) turning into the definition of subservient, dumb blondes with no opinions of their own. This depiction took things to the comical extreme. It\u2019s hilarious and icky all at once.<\/p>\n

After events that I won\u2019t spoil, Gloria\u2019s heartfelt reflection of her experience as a woman broke the spell of the patriarchy:<\/p>\n

You have to be thin, but not too thin\u2026 You have to be a boss, but you can\u2019t be mean\u2026 You\u2019re supposed to be pretty for men, but not so pretty that you tempt them too much\u2026You have to never get old, never be rude, never show off, never fail\u2026 I\u2019m just so tired of watching myself and every single other woman tie herself into knots so that people will like us.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Food for thought: was this movie director Greta Gerwig\u2019s way of \u2018deprogramming\u2019 our brains?<\/p>\n

Men need love too<\/h3>\n

The Barbie movie doesn\u2019t just want you to feel empathy for women, it also encourages compassion for men. Ken\u2019s character development sheds light on the pressure of societal expectations on them. His eventual breakdown revealed the core of his desires: simply to be seen, heard and loved. Was it manly to talk down to women and to assume all doctors were male? The Real World made it seem so. He didn\u2019t agree with these patriarchal ideas, but he emulated them anyway because that\u2019s what it took to be a \u2018man\u2019, or so he thought.<\/p>\n

Feminism isn\u2019t \u2018anti-men\u2019<\/h3>\n

Barbie\u2019s quest to restore her and Barbieland\u2019s perfection led to her discovering the shocking reality of the Real World. Ironically, her journey reveals that the supposed perfection of Barbieland isn\u2019t what it seems. A series of chaotic events showed that neither all-Barbie nor all-Ken rule was superior. Barbieland saw both, and the inequality \u2013 whichever way it skewed \u2013 led to negative outcomes. Newsflash: the all-female rule was just as discriminatory as the opposite. A \u2018perfect\u2019 world, then, is created by mutual understanding and taking steps towards fairer power distribution.<\/p>\n

Is the movie too \u2018woke\u2019?<\/h3>\n

Barbie and Sasha started off on the wrong foot, with the teen angrily accusing the once-optimistic Barbie of ruining female empowerment. I\u2019ll be honest, this dialogue didn\u2019t land perfectly for me. Some people criticise the movie for trying too hard to be \u2018woke\u2019, and in this moment, I could kinda<\/em> see where they\u2019re coming from.<\/p>\n

The outburst felt like an overkill (Barbie, a fascist?!). And this might just be limited to the social circles I\u2019m in, but I don\u2019t know anyone whose self-esteem was actually impacted by a mere doll. That said, I won\u2019t dismiss an issue just because I can\u2019t relate to it. Sasha\u2019s rage may be a reflection of Barbie-related issues faced in circles beyond my own.<\/p>\n

To be human is beautiful<\/h3>\n

Barbie gradually realises that human \u2018imperfections\u2019 tell the story of a person\u2019s life. She\u2019s so touched by the beauty of life that she decides to be human, even though she knows it means an imminent death.<\/p>\n

The Barbie movie acknowledges that life is tough for everyone, men and women alike. But the light at the end of the tunnel (or the movie) is this: the ups and downs of life make it worth living. Do we really want to chase perfection when even the perfect Stereotypical Barbie wants to leave it behind? Perfection is boring; to be human is beautiful\u2026 even if it means contending with difficult emotions and (*gasp*), cellulite.<\/p>\n

There isn\u2019t just one way to interpret the film, though. And that might be its entire point. As the character of Ruth Handler said, she didn\u2019t create Barbie with a conclusion in mind \u2013 it was up to Barbie to reach her own.<\/p>\n

Barbie, a \u2018brainless\u2019 watch?<\/h3>\n

I initially thought so, but was soon proven wrong. The Barbie movie goes beyond the cliche plot of \u2018finding yourself\u2019 (though, self-discovery plays a part). At once relatable and sobering, there are so many epiphanies and parallels that can be drawn to today\u2019s world. It isn\u2019t just a frivolous flick that\u2019ll help clear your mind after Oppenheimer. In some ways, it might just spark more questions about society and life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
