Temperatures are soaring and heat waves are happening in our city and around the world. Yup, climate change<\/a> is real, people! To avoid a potential heatstroke or sweaty mess, we\u2019ve put together a handy list of ways to keep it cool in Singapore\u2019s hot weather and perpetual summer.<\/p>\n

How to stay cool in Singapore\u2019s hot weather<\/h2>\n

1. Wear breathable fabric<\/h3>\n

We love wearing body-hugging ensembles that show off our gorgeous body shapes but save those for cooler days. Loose clothing that doesn\u2019t cling to the skin is your best friend during a heat wave. Dress in lighter shades and cooler fabrics such as cotton, linen, seersucker and hemp.<\/p>\n

2. Bring out the fans<\/h3>\n

Feel like you’re too reliant on AC? Turn on the ceiling fan and spritz yourself with mist to enjoy a cooling-down effect. Fans are an inexpensive way to lower the temperature of the room without the environmental impact of air conditioning. P.S. you can also place two fans at opposite windows to create a cross-breeze that will circulate cool air around the room.<\/p>\n

3. Indulge in an ice-cold treat<\/h3>\n

Smoothies, fruit juices, ice cream… the list goes on. There’s nothing like the blazing sun to send you running for something that’ll stave off the heat. Swing by ice cream parlours in Singapore<\/a> or vegan ice cream<\/a> spots to cool down the fun way.<\/p>\n

4. Never underestimate the power of H2O<\/h3>\n

Whether you\u2019re working from home<\/a> or in the office, it\u2019s good to have at least a two-litre water bottle by your side. Staying hydrated with sufficient liquids helps to regulate your body temperature. Your body also loses water through perspiration so if you want to avoid dehydration, drink up!<\/p>\n

5. Or take it up a notch with thirst-quenching drinks<\/h3>\n

Do you hate the taste of water? There\u2019s no excuse to avoid it since there are other ways to zhuzh it up. Quench your thirst with refreshing fruit-infused water (we like ours with cucumber and lemon slices plus a sprig of mint leaves), coconut water, watermelon juice, cold peppermint tea, chrysanthemum tea and isotonic drinks with electrolytes. Or get a bottle of cooling water, a traditional Chinese medicine drink that\u2019s said to relieve body heat.<\/p>\n

6. Avoid \u2018heaty\u2019 food<\/h3>\n

\u201cEh, that\u2019s too \u2018heaty\u2019, have something cooling instead.\u201d Growing up, we\u2019ve all had this conversation in our household. Even now, when someone\u2019s down with the flu or fever, their care package<\/a> includes \u2018cooling\u2019 items. For the uninitiated, the terms \u2018heaty\u2019 and \u2018cooling\u2019 are derived from an age-old belief that certain foods can cause various effects on the body.<\/p>\n

Examples of \u2018heaty\u2019 food include spicy food, durian<\/a>, chocolate<\/a>, deep-fried food and red meat. They\u2019re believed to cause thirst, fever and sore throat when taken excessively. On the other hand, \u2018cooling\u2019 food is said to remove the heat from your body. This includes items such as mangosteen, watermelon, green tea and water chestnut. There aren\u2019t any official studies to back this up, but hey, it helps some of us.<\/p>\n

7. Spritz on a facial mist<\/h3>\n

We can\u2019t tell you how much a facial mist comes in handy on especially warm days. It\u2019s also a great pick-me-up for slow afternoons. We rotate between Glow Recipe, Bioderma and Eau Thermale Avene.<\/p>\n

8. Take a stroll through lush green spaces<\/h3>\n

Try before you deny it! It may seem counterproductive to explore the great outdoors when it\u2019s so darn hot. But taking a walk in a shady green space<\/a> filled with trees is actually cooling and it calms your mind. Or try forest bathing<\/a> to be one with nature.<\/p>\n

9. Pat on sunscreen<\/h3>\n

\u2018Nuff said. We don\u2019t have to tell you twice. But remember to apply sunscreen<\/a> if you\u2019re going to be indoors too \u2013 oh, and don\u2019t forget to reapply it throughout the day!<\/p>\n

10. Keep it cool in the bedroom<\/h3>\n

Imagine walking up all sweaty and hot from the heat. We don\u2019t want that. Keep it cool by changing your pillow covers and bedsheets<\/a> to light and breathable fabric such as linen, cotton, lyocell and tencel. A cooling pillow helps a ton, too!<\/p>\n

11. Wear a hat<\/h3>\n

We don\u2019t know why we don\u2019t see a lot of this in Singapore but wearing a hat protects you from the sun\u2019s damaging rays. So don\u2019t just limit it to the beach or an outdoor activity<\/a>. Pick a sun hat, visor, cap or bucket hat with a wide brim and opt for darker colours. Some even have built-in UV protection \u2013 go for something with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of 30 and above.<\/p>\n

12. Don’t forget the deodorant<\/h3>\n

Sweat and stink go hand-in-hand, so protect yourself from judgy stares with organic and natural deodorants<\/a> that work best in Singapore’s scorching hot weather. Your pits will thank you.<\/p>\n

13. Plan a day at the beach<\/h3>\n

Is the heat getting to you? Cancel all plans and make it a beach day. Dust out your picnic mat and basket<\/a>, and bask in the sun and beach breeze. Make yourself comfy at a shady spot or park yourself at a beach club<\/a>.<\/p>\n

14. Bring out a portable fan<\/h3>\n

We used to be wary of what people thought when they saw us walking around with a portable fan. Now, we simply don\u2019t care. In fact, it\u2019s a staple item in our bag. Forget about the weird stares you get while waiting for the bus or MRT<\/a>. They\u2019re simply jealous and probably wish they had a portable fan for themselves. There are many rechargeable portable fans on the market, in various colours and with a stand, holder and clip-on feature. Take your pick.<\/p>\n

15. Run to an air-conditioned place<\/h3>\n

Singaporeans love aircon (portable aircons<\/a> included!) but turning it on at home for prolonged hours increases carbon footprint and the electricity bill. Instead, take a break and head to the nearest shopping mall<\/a>. You\u2019ll cool down and get your retail therapy fix along the way.<\/p>\n

16. Get an insulated water bottle that keeps your drink cool<\/h3>\n

Another staple that should be in your bag: vacuum insulated water bottles<\/a>. These babies keep the temperature of your liquid consistent whether it\u2019s a refreshingly cool drink or hot coffee. Lucky for us, reusable water bottles come in a variety of colours, sizes and features.<\/p>\n

17. Put your skincare in the fridge and use it later<\/h3>\n

Picture this: you just got out of a cool shower<\/a> and want to keep it that way. So you pull out your cleansing balm<\/a>, face mask<\/a> or moisturiser<\/a> from the fridge for an extra cool 20 minutes. Absolute bliss.<\/p>\n

18. Jump into a pool<\/h3>\n

Grab your best swimsuit<\/a> and make a splash at a public swimming pool<\/a> near you. Or check into a hotel that boasts a spectacular pool<\/a>. From Capella Singapore to The Outpost Hotel Sentosa, the choices are aplenty.<\/p>\n

19. Get a dehumidifier<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s no such thing as crisp weather in Singapore. Our frizzy hair<\/a> is proof of it. Rain or shine, humidity is always there like that annoying relative that just won\u2019t leave. Dial it down (the humidity, not the relative) with a handy dehumidifier that keeps moisture out of living spaces.<\/p>\n

20. Have a snow day<\/h3>\n

Snow in our tropical city? You bet. Snow City<\/a> is a snow chamber that gives you a close-to-real-life winter experience any day of the year. Up to 15 tons of snow is made each week to maintain the snow levels on the grounds. There\u2019s a winter shooting arena, bumper car arena, and loads more. You\u2019ll easily forget the blistering heat outside.<\/p>\n

21. Add a solar film to your window<\/h3>\n

So you\u2019ve got the living room and bedrooms covered with blackout curtains or blinds. But how about areas such as the service yard and kitchen windows? Block nasty sun rays with solar, UV and tinted window films.<\/p>\n
