In a recent survey conducted by The Straits Times, close to three out of 10 Singaporeans are <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/travel-destinations-2022\/\">planning to travel overseas<\/a> despite the uncertainty of the current Covid-19 situation. Judging from our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/honeycombers\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Instagram feed<\/a>, with the bulk of our friends posting about their travels (not jealous at all), this proves to be true.<\/p>\n<h2>Essential tips to help you with travel anxiety<\/h2>\n<p>I fall into this category and I too was stoked to travel. But for some reason, my stomach was in knots as the day approached. In fact, the usually cool, calm, collected and overprepared me was a ball of stress before my flight. I was having heart palpitations and even had a minor brain fart (I had packed my portable charger in my check-in luggage instead of my hand carry bag). The worst part, I was <a href=\"https:\/\/thehoneycombers.com\/singapore\/destinations-for-solo-travel\/\">travelling solo<\/a> after being cooped up for two years. It was as though I forgot how to function.<\/p>\n<h3>Do you have travel anxiety during the pandemic era? As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us may be apprehensive about travelling. While travel anxiety isn\u2019t an officially recognised disorder, it refers to feelings of worry or fear associated with travelling. Travel anxiety can occur for several reasons, including fear of the travelling process, being away from home and your comfort zone, or insecurity related to being in a new environment and meeting new people.<\/p>\n<p>Jae-Mie Yiew, clinical psychologist at <a href=\"https:\/\/psychologyblossom.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Psychology Blossom<\/a>, says it\u2019s common to experience some degree of nervousness before a trip or vacation as we often feel a loss of control when we travel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt home, we tend to maintain a routine, which may be boring, but feels safe and predictable. If these symptoms become overwhelming, they might even cause panic attacks. So, what can you do?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Plan ahead:<\/strong> it doesn\u2019t hurt to be overprepared. Check in advance and make sure you\u2019re got all your travel documents ready. Familiarise yourself with the travel guidelines of your destination to avoid any surprises.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Engage in activities that\u2019ll help keep you distracted and calm:<\/strong> immerse yourself in a book, watch a movie or listen to music.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Picture the outcome of your trip:<\/strong> think about all the exciting places you\u2019ll be visiting and what you\u2019ll be doing when you\u2019re there.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Remind yourself:<\/strong> you can expect many positive experiences in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I\u2019m no expert, but some tips that helped me was wearing comfortable attire for the flight, regulating my breathing, spritzing on calming essential oils (I used <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sephora.sg\/products\/this-works-choose-sleep-duo-spray\" rel=\"nofollow\">This Work\u2019s Stress Check Roll On<\/a>), and taking melatonin (remember to consult a doctor beforehand).<\/p>\n<h3>How to help someone with travel anxiety<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_255377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-255377\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-255377 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/coping-with-anxiety-900x643.jpeg\" alt=\"coping with anxiety\" width=\"900\" height=\"643\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/coping-with-anxiety-900x643.jpeg 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/coping-with-anxiety-768x549.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/06\/coping-with-anxiety.jpeg 1400w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 900px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 900\/643;\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-255377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photography: Priscilla Du Preez via Unsplash<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cOne positive way to support someone dealing with travel anxiety is to openly talk about it. Think about how you can help the other person cope with their symptoms or confront the challenges they\u2019re facing. This can offer many emotional benefits not only for the individual but for yourself as well,\u201d Jae-Mie says.<\/p>\n<p>Also, avoid comments that may invalidate the other person\u2019s feelings \u2013 though you might do it unintentionally by trying to cheer them up. Don\u2019t use phrases such as \u2018you\u2019re overreacting\u2019 or \u2018you shouldn\u2019t feel that way\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlaying down the person\u2019s experience might lead to confusion, and self-doubt, and cause them to hide their emotions,\u201d Jae-Mie explains.<\/p>\n<p>As for myself, the anticipation of flying was much greater than the real deal. Once I cleared customs and was on the plane, I calmed down and told myself, &#8216;Hey, that wasn\u2019t so bad after all&#8217;.
