Always, in December by Emily Stone

This one’s a tearjerker for sure – you’ve been warned. Every time Christmas approaches, Josie writes a letter to her late parents with the same message: “Missing you, always.” But this time, her annual routine is disrupted when she runs into Max on her way to posting said letter. The two of them hit it off and they spend Christmas together. But, plot twist: he later vanishes without a trace. However, thanks to fate, they bump into each other over the years.

Photography: Book Depository

2. The Mistletoe Pact by Jo Lovett

Meet Evie and Dan. Many moons ago, they made a pact that they’d marry each other if they were still single when they hit 30. Fast forward to Christmas Eve. On her last night as a 29-year-old, Evie finds herself hitched to Dan – in Las Vegas, no less. It’s totally understandable that they’re freaking out – do they make good on their pact or get a divorce to salvage the friendship? This one’s a slow-burn romance that’ll keep you warm during at night.

3. A Season for Second Chances by Jenny Bayliss

The story follows 40-something restauranteur Annie Sharp as she navigates her single life after ending her 26-year marriage. She finds a new lease of life when she moves to the seaside town of Willow Bay where she’s a temporary caretaker. The central theme is renewed hope, from meeting new people to having a new sense of purpose. A perfect read if you’re looking for something more heartfelt and less cheesy.

Photography: Book Depository

4. Eight Perfect Hours by Lia Louis

Let’s paint you a picture. It’s a brutal blizzard, the roads are closed and you’re stuck in your car — but as fate would have it, you meet Prince Charming. Trust us, it’s not the premise of a true-crime novel. Noelle Butterby and Sam Attwood keep each other company, and when the weather clears, they go their separate ways. But in true holiday romance fashion, they keep bumping into each other. If you loved One Day in December by Josie Silver, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this one.

5. Hercule Poirot’s Christmas by Agatha Christie

Not into sweet, sweet romance? Pick up this classic murder mystery by Agatha Christie aka Queen of Crime. Simeon Lee invites his family over for a festive reunion dinner. But the meal is halted when Simeon is found dead. We know it’s the Christmas season, but instead of cranberry sauce, expect lots and lots of blood.

6. Landline by Rainbow Rowell

Christmas is the time when families come together. But for Georgie McCool, that’s not the case. Her marriage is on the rocks. And to make things worse, she tells her husband she won’t be able to visit his family with him for Christmas – a trip that’s been planned weeks in advance. As she contemplates her relationship, something truly magical happens. Through an old landline, she miraculously gets in touch with – get this – her husband from the past, before they even got engaged. The Art of Thinking Clearly by Rolf Dobelli

I don’t read non-fiction books, but this is a birthday gift that’s been sitting on my shelf for way too long… This international bestseller provides insights into the cognitive biases that we tend to make daily. It’s an easy, breezy read – each chapter is only a few pages long to illustrate and explain clearly every cognitive error – that’s also very enlightening. It’s not a how-to guide; rather, it aims to help you think clearly when it comes to decision-making.
– Sufyan Saad, Junior Lifestyle Writer

Photography: Book Depository

9. Ghosts by Dolly Alderton

I’ve got to say, Alderton’s much-awaited fiction debut lives up to the hype. It revolves around the life of 30-something Nina who’s navigating the world of dating apps, career and dealing with a sick parent. Fans of Everything I Know About Love will enjoy Alderton’s witty (and often hilarious) commentary. I don’t want to say more because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone. But I will say that Max, the guy Nina dates in the book, would be best portrayed by a taller, broader, much younger and less Texan Matthew McConaughey.
– Jana Blanco, Contributing Editor

10. Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir

You probably know Andy Weir as the author of The Martian (yes, that Matt Damon ‘alone on Mars’ movie). His new book is another venture into space; only this time, the weight of the earth’s survival falls solely into the protagonist’s hands. The novel starts off with a mystery: he wakes up nowhere near earth, alone except for his dead colleagues, and with zero memories of how or why he got there. As he puts the pieces together, so does the reader. It’s a ‘save the world’ plot with solid interstellar twists. But heavy science jargon aside (you’ll either love the technical details or gloss past them), the story grows on you with time. The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood

In an attempt to escape the mundanity of everyday life (thanks, Covid), I picked up The Marlow Murder Club. It’s written by Robert Thorogood who happens to be the creator of BBC One’s murder mystery series, Death in Paradise. The whodunit is about a trio of middle-aged women playing detectives – cute, right? The plot is set in the small England town of Marlow, where 70-year-old Judith Potts hears a gunshot coming from her neighbour’s garden when she’s minding her own business and swimming in the Thames. Typically, I have no problem putting down a book but this one got me hooked with red herrings, clues and suspects. Flawed is about a society that idolises perfection above humanity. Filled with twists along the way, I was hooked from start to end. It’s a relatable tale that makes you think about the human philosophy of why we’re afraid of making mistakes or facing the consequences. It’s timeless, heart-gripping and I can’t recommend it enough. Cecilia Ahern’s stories have always been worth reading, so be sure to check out her other books like P.S. As the Lion City goes through rapid changes, Balli Kaur Jaswal brilliantly introduces the parallels of identity, community and history to the protagonist’s family.

44. Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi

Avni Doshi takes you on an emotional journey of love and betrayal between a mother and her daughter. The 240-page book is not a light read. The opening line of the novel, “I would be lying if I said my mother’s misery has never given me pleasure,” sets the tone for the entire narrative. These words are laced with grit and raw emotion, and they might just cut you as you turn the pages.
