Truth be told, I never saw myself as someone who would use a dating app in Singapore<\/a>. There was never a need to in previous years since I was always able to get to know people \u201corganically”. But then, Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0shut down most means of meeting new people in Singapore, I was working a 9-to-6 job, and I (not being the most interesting person) didn\u2019t have any hobbies to put myself out there in any way.<\/p>\n

So exactly one year ago, (after hesitantly hovering my thumb over the download button for a good minute) I went ahead to install a dating app and decided to give this whole online dating scene a try.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s everything I\u2019ve learnt from using dating apps in Singapore<\/h2>\n

1. It’s okay to be honest<\/h3>\n

There\u2019s nothing worse than having an excellent conversation<\/a> with someone you’ve met on a dating app, thinking it might lead to something more, and then finding out they\u2019re only here for a one-night stand. Or vice versa, knowing you only want a casual fling, and then finding out the other party has bigger plans in mind. While there\u2019s absolutely nothing wrong with wanting what you want, it\u2019s better to be upfront about what you\u2019re looking for to save time and disappointment.<\/p>\n

2. But not too honest<\/h3>\n

Thinking about the online dating horror stories<\/a> you\u2019ve heard from friends? Sadly, they ring true. For every genuine individual you meet, there\u2019ll be five other creeps who don\u2019t understand the importance of respecting your boundaries. (Yes, I\u2019m talking about you \u2013 the guy who tried to call me on WhatsApp, Telegram and FaceTime when I didn\u2019t respond fast enough). Be careful who you divulge your life story and secrets to, no matter how charming they appear to be. There are people out there who simply don\u2019t have good intentions.<\/p>\n

3. Don\u2019t judge a book by its cover<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve always found an individual\u2019s personality and character to be much more attractive than their looks, so it was a challenge for me at first as dating apps are so appearance-based. It\u2019s so easy to swipe left on someone just because you don\u2019t like how they dress<\/a> or the way they pose in a photograph. When I actually set aside my first impressions and chose not to make judgments based on appearance alone, I met some of the sweetest chaps around.<\/p>\n

4. You can make unexpected friendships<\/h3>\n

Some of the people that I met on dating apps went on to become treasured friends<\/a>. We had such engaging and enlightening conversations together, and even still catch up from time to time, cheering each other on in life. You might be on the quest for The One when you get on a dating app in Singapore, but if you\u2019re lucky, you\u2019ll also walk away with a fair few quality friends.<\/p>\n

5. What\u2019s meant to be won\u2019t feel forced<\/h3>\n

Sometimes when you really like someone, it\u2019s easy to get swept away. While the initial connection might have been instantaneous, if you find yourself chasing them for time and attention, it\u2019s probably a sign to walk away. Know your worth, and remember that what\u2019s meant to be yours will never feel forced. Relationships are hard work<\/a>, and you need to find a partner who can and who wants to show up for you.<\/p>\n

6. Keep your friends close<\/h3>\n

I was incredibly lucky to be surrounded by amazing friends. They supported me when I started my little adventure on dating apps, got excited with me when I was excited, gave me honest advice and knocked sense into me when I needed it. Eventually, when I did meet someone I adored, and who adored me in return, they celebrated with me. Don\u2019t forget that there are people outside the realm of dating<\/a> that care about you. Trust me, you\u2019ll need them.<\/p>\n
