Syfe worked with her to co-develop five tips to manage festive spending\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n

1. Start with baby steps<\/h3>\n

Now that a new year is upon us, it\u2019s the perfect time to assess your financial habits and set new goals. The thought of starting doesn\u2019t have to be daunting! Aim for small yet achievable goals, and set yourself up for success by slowly including them into your daily routine. As Dr Annabelle Chow puts it, don\u2019t forget to celebrate the small wins!<\/p>\n

2. Assess the reasons behind your spending<\/h3>\n

Define your values and goals: maybe it\u2019s saving up for a wedding, buying a new home, or taking a long trip to Europe. Next, work towards achieving the monetary comfort needed for them. Align your gifting accordingly, whether you\u2019re thinking of surprising a friend for the festive season or their birthday. For instance, if you\u2019re looking at spending quality time with your loved ones, why not spend on experiences like staycations?<\/p>\n

3. Think before you act<\/h3>\n

Impulsive shopping is common during this time of year \u2013 and you\u2019re not alone. Dr Chow encourages the practice of the STOP exercise: \u201cStop whatever you\u2019re doing, Take a breath and anchor yourself, Observe and notice what\u2019s happening inside and around you, notice the urge to purchase and acknowledge it, and finally, Proceed effectively by reminding yourself of the list of priorities, and whether this aligns with your values\u201d. This might sound easier than it actually is, but you\u2019ve got this!<\/p>\n

4. Earn while you sleep<\/h3>\n

Passive income is your best friend. Some examples of passive income sources include investing in Singapore REITs, which are representative of 12% of Singapore\u2019s whole equity market by market cap<\/a>.
