While you may be busy planning something romantic for your boo (or soon-to-be partner), here at Honeycombers, we\u2019ve decided to let you into our love lives. So we’re sharing dating stories that are funny, sweet and downright awkward. Grab a bag of popcorn; this is gonna be one helluva ride.<\/p>\n

True-life dating stories in Singapore<\/h2>\n

1. Is it love at first sight?<\/h3>\n

I had the most unsettling experience on a date. Within an hour, my date surprised me by asking me to be his girlfriend, claiming that it wasn’t necessary to get to know each other beforehand because relationship bonds are built over time. I mean, would you start a relationship within an hour of meeting someone? Throughout the date, he remained oddly quiet and contributed very little. I found myself carrying the weight of the conversation, trying to keep it going. Eventually, I reached my limit and called my bestie, hoping for an escape. Luckily, my bestie came to my rescue, and we even got a free ride out of it.<\/p>\n

2. The pasta-bilities of things going wrong…<\/h3>\n

I went out with this guy after three weeks of texting. When we finally met, the date went really well. We went to a carnival and later to TWG. Back then, they served this prawn linguine dish with arrabbiata sauce. He cracked a hilarious joke, I laughed too hard and snorted pasta sauce out from my nose. The date went on. But on the way back, I decided to text him to thank him for the date, only to realise his Telegram profile picture was now blank and his “last seen” became \u201clast seen never\u201d. He blocked me! I guess it just wasn’t meant to be.<\/p>\n

3. Dinner with a dash of insults<\/h3>\n

I went out with this guy from Bumble and we decided to have Korean BBQ for dinner. Fifteen minutes in, we talked about our lives and upbringing, but there were quite a few micro-aggressions in his questions. The one that threw me off was when I told him that I had to go for tuition for most of my subjects back in school. He said, \u201cNo offence, but I thought people from your race are typically quite chill and don’t go for that much tuition.\u201d What?! I didn\u2019t even identify as the race he claimed I was!<\/p>\n

4. When you get the signals wrong<\/h3>\n

I met someone for a first date at a coffee shop near my office. As most first dates go, I treated it like a get-to-know-you session. After we got coffee, we sat down and he did a little personality quiz on me. But halfway through explaining my results, he paused and suddenly kissed me – in the middle of a crowded coffee shop! I quickly pushed him away and asked what he was doing; he admitted he misread my behaviour. Safe to say, there wasn’t a second date.<\/p>\n

5. Wealthy people only<\/h3>\n

My date and I hit it off pretty well when we first started chatting online. I was so excited to meet him and find out more about him! After all, it was quite rare for me to find someone who had the exact same taste in food and music<\/a> as me. I thought he might be The One, honestly. However, when we finally met in person, the initial curiosity that I had for him was immediately dispelled. He was surprisingly snobbish and rude. He even insisted on knowing my financial background to see if we were compatible (he was from a well-to-do family). Glad to say I dodged a bullet and left 30 minutes into our date.<\/p>\n

6. From friends with benefits to fiancee<\/h3>\n

I met my fiancee at university; she and I were classmates in the same project group. I was a pretty playful person back then, so when our professor paired us up, we started chatting and our friendship soon turned into a “friends with benefits” sort of situation. However, just a few months after we got to know each other, we fell in love and entered an official relationship. While things haven’t always been easy (we almost had a long-distance relationship due to her work), we managed to overcome our challenges. We’re so sure of our compatibility and chemistry that we got married!<\/p>\n

7. The catfish<\/h3>\n

I started chatting with this girl on Tinder and thought she was quite interesting. We agreed to meet up for drinks<\/a>, but when she turned up, she looked nothing like her profile picture. After the initial surprise, I decided to carry on with the date. Since we hit it off over text, I thought we might still get along in real life \u2013 even if she wasn’t physically my type. Ironically, at the end of it, she told me she wasn’t attracted to me. Apparently, she was just looking for a one-night stand. Bummer.<\/p>\n

8. The (romantic) hike<\/h3>\n

My husband was probably a Boy Scout in his past life. He’s the type of guy to have a spreadsheet for everything, including quality time with his family (true story). A few months after we started dating, I surprised him with a hiking<\/a> trip up a volcano. I broke the news a few hours before the actual trip which, of course, made him panic. He bought us hiking shoes to prepare us for the four-hour trek, which was sweet. But when we got there, I found out that the trek was actually seven hours long and food wouldn\u2019t be included. Of course, I didn\u2019t bring any food. We were tired and hungry but we had an amazing time!<\/p>\n

9. Coffee, croissants and chatter<\/h3>\n

I went on a breakfast date with a match from a dating app (no points for guessing which one!). We met at a cute little cafe<\/a> and as a foodie, I’d already looked up the menu online so that I wouldn\u2019t be distracted, \u2018cause decision-making isn\u2019t one of my best traits. Personally, I thought the date was going really well as I was giving him a short backstory about myself, starting from my childhood. But halfway through my spiel, I realised that he’d ignored his phone call and by the time I started talking about my work life as a millennial, he had ignored three. Was this a red flag? Did he have commitment issues? Was he really single? \u201cI am not much of a talker in the morning,\u201d he explained. Assuming it was a dig at my incessant chatter, I apologised for talking too much. Well, it turns out that he was referring to the phone calls. Clearly, the best part of the date was the croissant and the coffee.<\/p>\n

10. When your body decides to troll you…<\/h3>\n

My date and I decided to have dinner before heading to the cinema. He ordered a massive plate of biryani<\/a> but I, on the other hand, decided to be a dainty lady so I ordered a sad thosai. \u201cAre you sure that\u2019s enough?\u201d he asked. I said yes but immediately regretted my decision. After dinner, we still had an hour or so before the movie. He even asked if I wanted popcorn, and again, I declined. Things were going fine during the movie until my stomach decided to troll me by letting out a loud growl\u2026 during a quiet scene. No one spoke a word about it until he dropped me off at my place. \u201cDon\u2019t tell your friends that I starved you during our date please.\u201d *goes to hide in a corner*<\/p>\n

11. A five-minute love story<\/h3>\n

This was a five-minute romance that did not make it to the first date. His first text to me was: \u201cDo you live in Bedok<\/a>? \u201cNo,\u201d I replied. First of all, that was an odd first question to ask, and secondly, why Bedok of all places? Don\u2019t get me wrong, it’s a great heartland but none of my pictures or bio description mentioned anything about it. He then replied, \u201c’cause my heart goes Bedok Bedok when I see your pictures.\u201d That was the nail in the coffin \u2013 R.I.P.<\/p>\n

12. The language barrier<\/h3>\n

It was a typical club<\/a> night. There was a guy going all out dancing on the platform next to his buddy. We locked eyes, he chatted me up, and later treated me to a fine meal<\/a> at McD\u2019s. He then proceeded to call me every evening to chat for hours, which would\u2019ve been fine, except he spoke in rapid-fire Mandarin and my grasp of the language is limited to small talk like, \u201cOh hey, the weather\u2019s great today\u201d. So, not wanting to reveal my embarrassing lack of understanding, I went along with the one-sided conversation and laughed at what I assumed were appropriate moments. (There were many.)<\/p>\n

Three weeks in, he probably thought he was the funniest person ever to roam the earth. On our first proper date, I finally confessed that I actually had no idea what he\u2019d been saying all along. Fast forward a couple of years, and we\u2019re now married. There\u2019s never a dull day!<\/p>\n

13. A love insurance<\/h3>\n

We\u2019d been chatting for about three weeks and everything was fine and dandy. He checked all the boxes: Good morning texts, timely replies and even phone calls that lasted for hours. I know, right \u2013 smooth-flowing phone convos in this day and age? I thought I hit the jackpot with him.<\/p>\n

On our first date, he picked me up on a Saturday evening and we headed to a quaint\u00a0Italian spot<\/a>. When we got there, he brought along his suitcase and my first thought was that I was going to receive a gift. Am I lucky or what? But before we could even settle in, he started talking about how his friend got into a terrible car accident and was plagued with exorbitant hospital bills. Not really a conversation starter I would go with, but okay, at least the pasta<\/a>\u00a0I ordered would make up for it. By the end of that story, he opened his suitcase and out came a stack of insurance brochures. I was not expecting that! I suppose I may be single but at least I have a dedicated insurance agent.<\/p>\n
