The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpa.gov.sg\/web\/portal\/home\/maritime-singapore\/public-outreach\/smt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore<\/a> has designed a free guided tour that uncovers more secrets behind some of Singapore\u2019s most buzzing neighbourhoods \u2013 Telok Ayer and Kampong Glam \u2013 that gives us amazing insights into our maritime legacy. <\/p>\n<p>This brand new trail is the third of its kind (there are two others on the MPA Singapore website), and will be open to the public for bookings from 1 April 2019 onwards. Let us give you a peek into the agenda\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Telok Ayer<\/h3>\n<p>You know Telok Ayer for its murals and chill cafes, but as you\u2019re sipping your cuppa, did you know this used to be where the shoreline was? A century ago, you\u2019d be facing the sea \u2013 the street used to be the beach before land was reclaimed for urban redevelopment.<\/p>\n<p>Pop by the historical institutions around Telok Ayer \u2013 also known as the Street of Harmony as there are three Chinese temples (one of which is now Fuk Tak Chi museum), two mosques and a church \u2013 for a glimpse into the area\u2019s past. The former Fuk Tak Chi temple used to house the shrine of the deity Tua Pek Kong, one of the first places that Hakka and Cantonese immigrants would visit to give thanks for being blessed to have arrived safely to their destination. <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Indian-Muslim settlers would go to the Nagore Dargah Shrine (now a heritage centre) to thank their saint, Shahul Hamid for their safe passage.<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, the Thian Hock Keng temple was where people prayed to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea. Find it next to Telok Ayer Green, where sculptures bring these stories to life (almost).<\/p>\n<h3>Kampong Glam<\/h3>\n<p>While Telok Ayer pays homage to early Chinese and Indian migrants, Kampong Glam features the maritime legacy of the Malay community that settled on our shores.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-189100 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/18.png\" alt=\"Catch a glimpse of Telok Ayer and Kampong Glam\u2019s maritime past\" width=\"930\" height=\"550\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/18.png 930w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/18.png 900w, https:\/\/static.thehoneycombers.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2019\/03\/18.png 768w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 930px) 100vw, 930px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 930px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 930\/550;\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another culturally-rich enclave marked by rows upon rows of shophouses, Kampong Glam has acquired a hipster-approved reputation in recent years. But before becoming a trendy hangout, this was where the sea gypsies (<em>orang laut<\/em>) lived. <\/p>\n<p>At Muscat Street, walk through the Sultan Gate to get a closer look at the golden domes of the Sultan Mosque (Masjid Sultan), an iconic and unmissable landmark of the district.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way, spot the Jewel of Muscat mural, which symbolised the revival of ancient trade routes linking Asia to the Middle East.
