It\u2019s no secret, we love our <\/span>local fare<\/span><\/a>. And we\u2019re psyched to see it possibly join UNESCO\u2019s intangible cultural heritage list. You don\u2019t have to ask us twice \u2013 we think our hawker culture deserves to share the spotlight with China\u2019s dragon boat festival, India\u2019s yoga, Turkey\u2019s whistled language and other global cultural phenomenons. You can <\/span>pledge your support<\/span><\/a> to this nomination on Our SG Heritage like we did. <\/span><\/p>\n

Where else can you find more than 6,000 hawkers across 110 odd <\/span>hawker centres<\/span><\/a> dishing out the most delicious grub. Hawker centres are more than just an organised shelter with food stalls \u2013 it\u2019s woven into the very laksa-stained fabric of our island city. Crazy rich Asian or regular normal folk, we\u2019re all the same to the hawker aunty who\u2019ll serve us with a smile (almost always). It sees more people every day than an H&M sale \u2013 it\u2019s where we meet our family and friends for scrumptious meals, peanut sauce slathered <\/span>satay<\/span><\/a>, the cheapest <\/span>Michelin-starred food<\/span><\/a> in the world, <\/span>kopis<\/span><\/a> that can wake the dead and #cheatday <\/span>curry puffs<\/span><\/a>. From <\/span>Chomp Chomp<\/span><\/a> to <\/span>Amoy<\/span><\/a> and everything in-between, we all have our regular haunts where several <\/span>generations of a hawker family<\/span><\/a> work together like pros. <\/span><\/p>\n

Does it scare us that hawker culture might fade away with young generations choosing to move away from the family business? Yes, it does! So, we\u2019re rooting for this UNESCO listing for selfish reasons \u2013 it\u2019s gotta live on. Let\u2019s be honest, this iconic cultural movement makes Singapore a foodie para-para-paradise.<\/span><\/p>\n
