Derived from the Teochew words \u201ckang chu\u201d (aka river owner), this neighbourhood\u2019s name is an homage to the plantation owners and the clan head that settled in the area during the 19th century. Before its development, the land was home to tigers, and farmers growing gambier, pepper, and rubber plantations. Now, it\u2019s a bustling residential area \u2013 sans the tigers, of course.
