First established in 1929 as a food market with fresh produce stalls, Maxwell (as it’s fondly known by us locals) added cooked food stalls and eating areas a year later, before transforming into a proper food centre in 1987. And the rest is history, as they say. This complex may be largely known for Chinese food (any Hainanese chicken rice lovers in the house?), but it has its fair share of other cuisines too.

Ready to dig in? Note that the food centre can get pretty crowded during the day, especially at lunchtime. We recommend dropping by after 2pm, when most people return to the grind. But don’t be fooled by the name – you won’t be scarfing down plant-based food. The menu boasts beloved familiar dishes like mee rebus, lontong, nasi goreng kampong, and more.
