The buzz on what’s happening in Singapore this week
1. A heritage brand walks into a mall for the first time

Get ready to welcome Chin Mee Chin‘s second outlet at Nex! Officially opening tomorrow (8 August 2026), the new location showcases the brand’s evolution, offering new dishes alongside the original menu and modern takes on well-loved classics.
The kaya cream puff is now reimagined as a kaya custard choux au craquelin ($3 per piece or $10 for a box of four), with a dark chocolate variant if you want a more indulgent dessert. Keep a lookout for new menu additions like the curry potato pie ($3.80) and grilled kaffir lime chicken sandwich ($8.80).
A fan of the classics true and true? Don’t worry, you can still get your hands on the kaya toast sets ($6.50) and familiar favourites like hae bee hiam bun, luncheon meat bun, and otah bun ($2.80 each).
2. Yeow Kai Chai returns to helm Singapore Writers Festival

Did you know it’s been 30 years since Singapore Writers Festival was founded? And the festival is pulling out all the stops for the grand celebration. Former festival director Yeow Kai Chai has been tapped to lead SWF’s milestone edition in 2027, presented as an opportunity to honour its legacy while setting the course for the festival’s continued evolution. Kai Chai served as festival director from 2015 to 2018, bringing extensive experience and deep knowledge to the role.
3. Enjoy delicious beer direct from the tank

Another week, another exciting news from Sentosa. People People Brewing Co. will introduce its first locally brewed beer made onsite this month! Batch 001 marks the official start of the social brewery and gastropub’s tank-to-tap beer programme. An exclusive First Pour celebration will take place on 13 August for founding members, while the public can enjoy Batch 001 for $5 per pour on 14 August 2026, throughout the day.
4. Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Nope, it’s actually none other than the annual Perseids Meteor Shower, which returns this month and is set to peak overnight from 12 to 13 August 2026. During this time, Earth passes through a trail of debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, and the particles enter our planet’s atmosphere at extremely high speeds. The result? Bright streaks of light in the night sky!
Observers may see up to 100 meteors per hour under ideal conditions, aka dark skies and no rain. In Singapore, the best time to catch the Perseids is between 3am and 6am – no special equipment needed. Head to locations such as East Coast Park, Changi Beach Park, Marina Barrage, and the Southern Ridges for the best, unobstructed views.
5. Broader access to financial education for migrant domestic workers

Award-winning local charity Aidha celebrates its 20th anniversary by launching a new national campaign for migrant domestic workers in Singapore. The Financial Literacy ACCESS Campaign (Advancing Capability through Community, Education & Sustainable Savings) is a three-year initiative that aims to expand access to financial education for migrant domestic workers based here.
As part of the campaign, two initiatives were designed to support workers at different stages of their financial journey. MoneyStar is a free half-day foundational course for those who just arrived in Singapore, while the Ask Aidha Money Management Helpdesk is where workers can get financial guidance and practical support.
Aidha will also work with employers, employment agencies, and partners to broaden access to financial education and help more migrant domestic workers build financially secure futures.
6. Viva la (local) cinema!

The thriving Filmhouse turns its screens towards home with Got Time For Cinema?, a month-long programme celebrating homegrown filmmakers and their works. Throughout August, moviegoers can revisit landmark local films, discover and meet movie makers, and partake in activities beyond the screen. Got nothing to do on 9 August 2026? Swing by and join an NDP watch party, the irreverent cult favourite which has been around since The Projector‘s heydays.

Speaking of local talent, celebrated auteur Anthony Chen will be right at the centre of things throughout the month too. His latest film, We Are All Strangers, will play in cinemas from 20 August 2026, with a series of fun activities taking place to hype the release. This includes retrospective screenings of Ilo Ilo and Wet Season at Golden Village Cineleisure and Century Square on 8 & 9 and 15 & 16 August, a coffeeshop meet-and-greet on 21 August, an afternoon tea panel at Bund & Toss and a karaoke night at Filmhouse on 22 August 2026.

7. Pop Mart unveils new store and first bakery in Southeast Asia

Sentosa is the gift that keeps on giving, and for good reason. Behemoth art toy leader Pop Mart has officially unveiled its brand-new two-storey store at Resorts World Sentosa. Oh, do we hear your wallets begging for mercy? Oops. The first floor is your standard Pop Mart store, filled with all the beloved characters along with Singapore-exclusive products. And if you’re lucky, you might just be able to participate in the meet-and-greet sessions at the store!
But the second floor’s where everyone should be excited about. Introducing the first Pop Bakery in Southeast Asia, featuring the brand’s signature desserts inspired by the characters and localised gourmet items made for the Singapore market. Hmmm, looks like a trip to Sentosa is on the cards soon…
8. Fujifilm celebrates 40 years of unfiltered magic

Guess who turns 40 this year and still doesn’t look like it? That’s right – it’s Fujifilm, and the brand is celebrating the anniversary of QuickSnap, the one-time-use camera, with a series of pop-up events across Singapore. Fans can check out winning participants of Fujifilm’s Little Big Views photography challenge captured on QuickSnap cameras, grab exciting prizes at the claw game machine, and join a 15-minute guided session at the QuickSnap Education Corner.
The pop-up is currently running till 2 September 2026 at Fujifilm’s flagship store in Suntec City before moving to One Punggol’s main atrium from 7 to 13 September 2026.
9. Bugis Street’s Level 2 continues evolving with a brand-new zone

We hear conflicting reports about Singapore’s Bugis Street: Gen Zs deem it the coolest place on earth, but mainstream media say it’s as dead as a graveyard. You’ll just have to find out now by heading down to check out the refreshed Level 2, which marks a new chapter for the mall. Somewhere @ Bugis Street is a new concept bringing together local and indie brands, workshops and creative sessions, a creative market on weekends, and more!
If you ask us, our itinerary will include shopping at Ruby Merlot, making personalised gifts at White Pixies, and grabbing matcha at Creamy Sippies, before snapping keepsakes at Standard Photo Studio. Psst: keep a lookout for Myth Jinn Escape Room, a soon-to-open interactive adventure exclusive to Singapore.
10. Our iconic coffee shops, but in mini brick form

Something adorable this way comes! Kopitiam has partnered with global brand Coca-Cola for a limited-edition building block collection celebrating iconic kopitiam moments! The collection comprises three unique mini brick designs, including a traditional kopitiam shophouse and a mystery Kopi Kiosk.
The Kopitiam x Coca-Cola Mini Bricks Collectible Set will be available at eight participating Kopitiam outlets islandwide, limited to 160 sets of each blind box. Only 20 sets are allocated to each location. You can redeem a box by purchasing a can of Coca-Cola Original Taste or Zero Sugar for one stamp (collect eight stamps) or the full set by purchasing one carton at $38.80 nett.
11. You and Bes-Tea, holding hands…

Trust Chagee to come out with the most adorable plushies in Singapore. Have you gotten your hands on the latest Bes-Tea Brew Crew? There are six lovable personalities for you to collect, all arriving as a blind box. One design detail that’ll drive you wild is that the characters are designed to hold hands with one another! (Picture us going feral when we found out…) So you can choose to collect all of them or split the set with your friends.
Complete your collection with the pillow plush and the Chagee store sticker set. Wanna meet the Brew Crew in real life? A life-size installation of all six characters, hands linked, can be spotted at Chagee Suntec City, with smaller versions available at Chagee VivoCity and Orchardgateway.
12. See the world through new eyewear

Zhoosh up your peepers with stylish frames from Bolon Eyewear‘s Spring/Summer 2026 collection, inspired by the atmospheric shifts of a metropolitan day. Fashionistas can look forward to a variety of styles, from delicate, minimalist designs to bold, avant-garde shapes. Everything in the collection is made with premium-grade titanium, Italian acetate, and memory resin, resulting in frames that are lightweight yet painfully elegant.
We’re always told not to stare directly at the sun, but with Bolon’s selection of sunglasses, you can do that – and still look oh-so-chic. Choose from cool designs such as Munich ($229), a funky square silhouette with crisp lines, Jaipur ($159), full-rimmed oval frames in a wheat gold finish and pink-washed lenses, or Amsterdam ($229), a chic pair in tortoiseshell or translucent white.
Need new eyeglasses? Bolon’s latest collection has those, too. Consider Milton ($259), a formidable minimalist number with a polished silver finish. You’ll definitely feel like a model after donning them.
13. Another Pop Mart collab up for grabs

Another day, another Pop Mart collab. Starbucks is teaming up with everyone’s favourite pouty icon, Molly, for an Asia Pacific-exclusive collaboration celebrating her 20th anniversary. Launching from 3 August on the Starbucks official store, LazMall, and ShopeeMall, the limited-edition collection features colourful tumblers, mugs, umbrellas and other collectables inspired by the beloved Pop Mart character, with purchases capped at two pieces per item.
And that’s a wrap on what’s happening in Singapore this week (and beyond).
