Best places for water sports in Singapore
1. Wakeboarding
In a nutshell, this invigorating water sport allows you to surf on a specifically designed board whilst being towed by a high-speed craft. Singapore Wake Park at East Coast Park is brilliant for this. The cable-ski park built in a lagoon features three cable systems for beginners and experienced thrill-seekers of all ages – including families! Try the high-energy sport and work your way up to challenge yourself with advanced obstacles.
2. Aqua Fitness
Make fitness fun again with sessions for all ages at the Singapore Sports Hub. The aqua fitness classes combine exercise movements with dance for a workout that puts less stress on your joints and muscles. Head to the OCBC Aquatic Centre to try Aqua Gold (for low to moderate intensity), Aqua HIIT Deepwater (for high-intensity exercises), and more.
3. Windsurfing
A combination of sailing and surfing, this water sport can be done at East Coast Park. Think of it as the laid-back brother of sailing. Adrenaline junkies can freestyle by performing jumps, loops and spins. Get started with courses at Aloha Sea Sports Centre, or rent the gear and hit the water if you’re already a pro. Constant Wind Sea Sports Centre also offers basic windsurfing courses and rental equipment for you to make a splash at Changi.
4. Diving
Have little ones who want to learn how to dive gracefully into the pool? Take it from certified coaches who will teach them what they need to know about this sport. The Learn to Dive programme at the OCBC Aquatic Centre imparts basic diving skills to students aged six and above. Once they’ve got the foundation covered, lessons will move on to twists, somersaults and going up to the 5m-tall platform.
5. Stand-up paddleboarding
If you prefer a water sport that’s less intense or competitive, try the stand-up paddleboard (or SUP for short). It’s not only relaxing, but it’s excellent for building strength, endurance and, of course, balance. Immerse yourself in nature whilst standing on a longboard, and paddle on calm waters with a double-bladed oar. Above all, it’s an easy, family-friendly sport for newbies. You can try it at places like Ola Beach Club in Sentosa, Aloha Sea Sports Centre at East Coast Park and Constant Wind Sea Sports Centre in Changi.
6. Attend mermaid school
Yes, you read that right. A mermaid school right here in Singapore. Finally, an opportunity to live out your childhood mermaid fantasies. Take the course with Syrena, Singapore’s first mermaid, who will teach you everything you need to know. Not only will you be immersed in the history and mythology of mermaids, but you’ll also get the chance to don a tail of your own! Get those core muscles ready because you need your strength, being a mermaid isn’t as easy as it seems.
7. Sailing
Fancy a sail right in the heart of the city? All aboard the boats in Marina Bay, thanks to DBS’ Sailing At The Bay programme. Free and open to the public, these sailing activities are usually held over weekend afternoons (with a couple of weekday options) and offer a fun time cruising around the bay with stunning views.
8. Kayaking
Make a splash with this unique family-friendly activity that’s great for all ages and fitness levels. Join the first and only kayak sailing tour in Singapore with Kayak Fishing. First-timer? Don’t worry, you don’t need any sailing experience because guides will teach you the basics. Adventures include exploring Sentosa, East Coast, Punggol Reservoir, Pulau Ubin and more.
9. Bodyboarding
Love to surf? Or new to the sport? Whatever the case, everyone’s welcome at Splash-N-Surf. The Stingray, a half-pipe surfing facility, is where you can have a shot at bodyboarding and skimboarding. If you’re up for an adventure, ride those waves.
10. Dragon boating
If you’re a newcomer to the sport, learn from the pros at the Singapore Dragon Boat Association. Its orientation programme, helmed by experienced trainers, lets first-timers try the activity under safe guidance. So gather your mates and head to Kallang Water Sports Centre to paddle your way through the waters. Psst: Singapore Sports Hub’s Water Sports Centre also offers dragon boat rentals.
11. Donut riding and banana boating
Hit up Ola Beach Club for more splashin’ fun onboard its inflated banana boat, where you can enjoy the breeze in your hair as you take in the seaside views. Otherwise, try the donut ride to zip across the waters as a speedboat tugs you along.
