Here are the virtual walks to make you feel like you’re in an entirely different city. Think Google maps street view, but way better.
Wanna travel but can’t? (Thanks a bunch, Covid-19.) Whine to your BFF no more because we’ve got the perfect solution. After looking up images and videos of travel destinations in a bid to (somewhat) satisfy our wanderlust, we stumbled upon what might be our new favourite genre of travel videos: virtual walking tours in incredible 2160p resolution (aka 4k videos). Take a virtual stroll around your destination of choice with these immersive vids – after all, there are no restrictions on traveling from your couch!
Ibiza, Spain
Perhaps the most swoon-worthy of Spain’s Balearic Islands, Ibiza’s many sights include the charming old town, lazy beaches and quiet farmlands. We could really use a stroll along the historic cobblestone streets right now, but failing that, admiring its whitewashed walls and terracotta roofs through a virtual tour might be the next best thing.
Bangkok, Thailand
You can’t get your shopping and massages, but you can convince yourself that you’re walking along Thailand’s busiest city. Bangkok’s streets are sadly more than just a little bare right now, and we’re glad that these videos take us back to a time of their bustling glory.
New York City, USA
As the Big Apple goes into lockdown, we take to the Internet to (virtually) tour the city that never sleeps. Hit play and make like you’re sauntering down the pavement with neon signs overhead and yellow cabs zipping by.
Tokyo, Japan
Japan’s capital boasts everything from ancient temples to sleek skyscrapers to quirky themed streets – which you can explore through your screen. Take in the sights and sounds of Tokyo’s many enclaves to get excited for when the Summer Olympics are finally going ahead.
Amsterdam, the Netherlands
Gabled facades line the extensive canals, and natives pass by on their bikes. This is the Netherlands’ beautiful capital and there’s no doubt it’s on many a bucket list. For now, though, we’re happy to enjoy Amsterdam’s postcard-worthy scenes virtually.
London, UK
London is the largest city in the UK, so journeying through its sights (even if you’re doing it by watching videos on your bed) is sure to keep you occupied for a good part of the day. While many warn about the city’s notoriously gloomy weather, this virtual tour proves it’s beautiful even in the rain – and we can’t wait to visit once we ride out this virus storm.
Hanoi, Vietnam
Vietnam’s capital is a mishmash of Southeast Asian, Chinese and French influences. The Old Quarter is a tourist hotspot, an ancient town where elements of its colonial heritage are readily apparent amidst a sea of local sights. Feast your eyes on the busy scenes of this street, filmed before the world became a very strange place.
Vancouver, Canada
Fresh-off-the-boat seafood, a diverse culture and amazing natural scenery are some of the things Vancouver is loved for. This Canadian city is also known for being a great spot to visit all year round – except now, which is why we found a video to bring the place to you.
Marseille, France
Marseille is a picturesque port city steeped in culture. A little bit gritty, a little bit chic, this city is a blend of the old and the trendy with an eclectic edge. Explore it for yourself with a virtual walking tour and start dreaming of your travel itinerary.
Seoul, South Korea
The capital of South Korea, Seoul is known for much more than K-dramas and cosmetic surgery. It’s home to a whole lot of street markets and modern architecture, as well as ancient palaces and old traditional villages – here’s one of ’em.
