If you love beer and having a good time, one of the best things about the month of October is Oktoberfest, right? This year the sleepy Singapore suburb of Seletar will be having its very own version at The Summerhouse, and you really don’t want to miss out
Oktoberfest is here again and you know what that means – it’s time to dust off your lederhosen. The siren call of Bavarian weisswurst and beer awaits, but before you hurry off to the usual spots in your best blue and white outfits (colours of the Bavarian flag), a major Oktoberfest blowout is bubbling up in Seletar, a sleepy town in Singapore’s northeast region.
Multi-concept food and beverage and lifestyle space The Summerhouse is transforming its idyllic bungalow and sprawling garden into an Oktoberfest carnival on 21 October, complete with German food stations, mobile bars, traditional beer games, and a live German oom-pah band. Oh, and did we mention, tonnes of Erdinger beer? Prost, we say!

German food and beer at Oktoberfest at The Summerhouse
Come Saturday, The Summerhouse will be packed with live food stations, each serving traditional German bites (of course). In between pints of Erdinger beer, grab some juicy Bavarian weisswurst ($20), pork belly roast ($20), or Nuernberger sausages ($5). Pair them with a pretzel ($10) – served with radish and obatzter, a Bavarian mashed cheese. Hang around the mobile bars to get your beer fix or better yet, hop onto the Erdinger Barcycle, a pedal-powered vehicle that’s also a counter-top bar.
Try some outrageous Oktoberfest drinking games
When it comes to outrageous beer games, the Germans have it covered. Test your strength with stein hoisting, a traditional Bavarian contest where competitors try to hold a one-litre beer stein with a straight arm for the longest time. If you’re more of a chugger, then gather the squad for gelande quaffing – slide a pint down a bar top, where your teammate will attempt to catch at the other end before drinking up. If that’s not challenging enough, try the rasenski, a balancing game on a pair of skis, or the Hammerschlagen, where you drive nails into a tree stump as quickly as you can. For more bragging rights, you can even get down and dirty at a cow milking contest.
Break out those dance moves at Oktoberfest at The Summerhouse
No Oktoberfest celebration is complete without a German oom-pah band. But don’t expect a typical performance from Die Dorf Fest Kapelle – they perform a mix of German hits and chart-topping pop tunes – and the band uses a variety of traditional and modern instruments. One thing’s for sure; Seletar has never seen this much oom-pa-pa oom-pa-pa!
Psst… If you’re up for more Oktoberfest revelry, Wildseed Cafe & Bar at The Summerhouse has a special Oktoberfest menu and promotions on Erdinger beer from now until 22 October. Find out more here.
