With sustainable initiatives, warm hospitality, and a dash of local culture, The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi is a paradise for families, couples, and solo adventurers alike.
The camera loves The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi. Located on the southwest coast and within a 10 million-year-old rainforest, you’re greeted by soothing sounds of nature, azure waters of the Andaman Sea and majestic architecture. But beyond its facade, what stole our hearts in the 5-star hotel in Langkawi is its sustainable initiatives, warm hospitality and appreciation for local culture. I was in dire need of a break (aren’t we all?), so I took a short island getaway to experience the hotel in all its glory.
The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi review: A fusion of nature and luxury
The hotel has many things to brag about. The sprawling grounds house 119 rooms with 90 rainforest deluxe rooms and junior suites, plus 29 oceanfront, beach and rainforest villas. It’s also home to the island’s only overwater spa with a hammam, four unique dining spots, three stunning swimming pools, and a bay with direct access to diving sites. You bet it makes for a versatile stay for families with kiddos, a romantic weekend or even a restorative solo getaway.
Feel like the king (or queen) of the jungle in your spacious room
I had the opportunity to stay in the oceanfront villa and was immediately charmed by the view of the Andaman Sea at the sundeck with an outdoor private pool. The 2,152 sq ft space is spread across dining and living areas, a king bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a bathtub and marble shower. I also loved the touches of Malaysian-inspired accents and furnishings – some interior accessories are available for purchase at the retail store. It took a lot of willpower to drag myself out of the villa but taking a stroll on the premises is just as dreamy. Witness sightings of monkeys (the dusky leaf monkeys are absolute cuties), lemurs, hornbills, and even eagles.
Four distinct culinary experiences await
All the walking worked up my appetite so I was thrilled about the five-hour dim sum buffet at mod-Chinese restaurant Hai Yan. The seaside restaurant stuns with a massive chandelier at the entrance, alongside hand-woven bamboo lanterns and carved wood panels and doors across the space. I tucked into a sumptuous spread of mains with steamed and fried dim sum bites. At night, the restaurant transforms into an intimate fine dining experience featuring the signature duck.
Craving Malay and Indian cuisine? Take refuge from the sun as Langkawi Kitchen welcomes you with a spread of traditional and modern Asian fare. Guests can also have breakfast here with free-flow mimosas and teh tarik. Families will enjoy the Western and fusion favourites at Beach Grill which also features an infinity pool for a splash of fun.
For adults, they’ve got your back with refreshing sunset drinks and Southeast Asian fare at the floating Horizon Bar. It’s home to an adults-only infinity pool where you can catch the mother of all golden hours. Safe to say my camera roll was filled with gorgeous pictures. It’s also General Manager Ellen Franke’s favourite spot for a little breather.
Sustainability shines through and through
Ellen shares that sustainability has been at the heart of the hotel since its opening in 2017. They’ve implemented eco-friendly practices like using bamboo straws and biodegradable cups. The rooms feature energy-saving sensors, biodegradable amenities, and a towel refreshing service upon request to reduce water waste. They also offer products by local artisans who repurpose fabrics, and sustainably-sourced and refillable bathroom amenities. All restaurants use homegrown herbs and veggies from Nibong Garden, which was created during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Ritz Kidz program educates children on sustainability through tree planting and upcycling. Led by marine biologist Fadzli Luqman, the Eco-Discovery Centre teaches kids about marine life and supports ocean cleaning with a sea cucumber nursery. While you’re there, don’t forget to soak up the tranquil scenes and pen something down at The Walkway of Wishes. This natural pond has a red bridge inspired by the island’s mystical granter of wishes, Tasik Dayang Bunting, aka The Lake of Pregnant Maiden.
After deep diving into its culture, luxury and laid-back beach vibes, I was sad to bid farewell to this amazing establishment. If you’re looking to make the most out of your next island getaway, it’s safe to say that The Ritz-Carlton Langkawi’s got you covered.
