Swati Singh has been helping individuals attain balance in their bodies and minds by teaching yoga and providing health coaching tailored to their needs for over a decade.
We love entrepreneurs and small business owners at Honeycombers, which is why we’ve created Launchpad, a comprehensive digital networking platform (with IRL benefits, too) that encourages connection, business support and community. It’s a privilege and pleasure to learn from so many talented and inspiring folks, so we’ve decided to share the love by interviewing some of the lovely Launchpad members. Looking for inspiration? Check out how Swati Singh, certified holistic health coach and yoga teacher, gets it done like a boss.
How I get it done: Swati Singh
What is your backstory and why did you decide to launch your business?
My keener interest in yoga and making nutritional adjustments started in 2009. I was working in the corporate world prior to that and had my fair share of unhealthy eating habits. So I compensated through yo-yo-ing with many diets. I was overweight and had borderline PCOS in my early 20s.
In 2009, I started exercising and hitting the gym seriously for the first time in my life. That’s when I took my first yoga class at a gym and there was no looking back. The physical and mental aspects of yoga coupled with a bit of my own nutritional adjustments and knowledge helped me become leaner and fitter.
I started teaching yoga in 2010 but never stopped learning more and more about food, lifestyle and overall nutrition. I finally took a course in nutrition in 2018 and became a certified health coach. My philosophy of “food is medicine” has deepened. I now empower my clients to lead a wholesome life by adopting lifestyle and food habits that are optimum for the body and mind.
My own experiences with food, exercise and lifestyle drive me to help my clients. Each one of us has the ability to heal ourselves. My passion and love for health and wellness – both body and mind – drove me to launch Wellness with Swati!
On a typical morning
I wake up really early every morning. My morning routine is super special and sacred in every way for me. I wake up around 4.45am. After a short meditation, I head out for a run. My kids’ school starts pretty early so I get back to see them off and spend some quality time before they head out.
We’re all early risers in our family. I start work each day around 7.30am (meeting yoga clients). Later on, I dedicate time for nutrition calls and client meetings. This is what my mornings look like, more or less.
On dealing with self-doubt and criticism
Working as a health coach and as a yoga teacher – this whole journey started with the feeling of uncertainty and doubt. Don’t we all face these feelings of doubt and criticism at some point in our lives? I was working in the corporate world before taking this leap of faith. Singapore has been home for 12 years now. I love what I do.
This journey of yoga and nutrition has just surpassed all the self-doubt I had. Yes, there are times when I launch something new or work with someone going through chronic health issues, and the feelings crop up. I’m only human, right? My faith, belief and love for my work always keep me grounded and centred. I truly believe we should always strive for what we love to do!
On keeping stress levels low
Meditation. This is the one and only way I’ve seen my stress levels go lower. A self-care ritual, even with two minutes of breathwork on days where I don’t have time, has kept me going. I would say consistency is the key! Isn’t it with everything?
On staying motivated and energised
Consistency, consistency and consistency! It’s a constant in my life. I’ve seen many of us with willpower. However, it’s the lack of consistency with anything – exercise, morning walk, meditation practice or weekly menu planning – that keeps us off track.
Yes, there are days when I’m unwell or emotionally not up for it. During those days I’ve learned to be really kind to myself (no negative self-talk) and get back on with my routine the day after. I’ve been practising this for a decade. The more you practice, the stronger the muscle gets, keeping you motivated and energised.
On the advice you’d give your younger self
To love me more and not be a people pleaser. Also, to be less of an approval seeker.
On winding down in the evening
Well, I love this one. My morning and evening rituals are truly very precious. Just like in the morning, in the evenings I start to slow down after 7pm. I often take a short evening walk followed by spending time with family. I don’t use gadgets after 8.30pm and I’m in bed by 9.30 pm. A short meditation before I sleep is part of my daily ritual. I do sometimes hang out with a good book. This is most evenings for me.
