While there are shelves full of perfumes at Sephora, the quest to find a signature scent is a tad more challenging. That’s why Johanna Monange founded Maison 21G. This French haute perfumery welcomes you to try perfume creation workshops where you can mix up one-of-a-kind fragrances.

Journey through a world of scents
We swung by Maison 21G’s boutique at Duxton to try it all out for ourselves and boy, were we blown away! This elegant fragrance boutique is stocked with all the scents you can dream of, with an inviting decor that puts you at ease.
The perfume creation workshop starts with a personality quiz – simply scan the QR code provided and get clicking. The results provide a starting point for Maison 21G’s experts to recommend a range of scents you might fancy based on your personality and lifestyle. Love a refreshing spritz? Citrusy, fruity picks are up your alley. Want something strong and sultry? Deep, musky scents will have your vote.
You’ll get two groups of recommended scents to try. Pick the ones that are up to sniff and you’ll be invited to narrow them down to five of your favourites. Ocean Odyssey is one of mine: a hug in a bottle, it’s warm and comforting, like freshly washed linen.
Pro tip: we learnt that sniffing coffee beans is a huge ‘no-no’ for your sense of smell! This is akin to a ‘force restart’ on your computer, which shuts down your olfactory system. Instead, smell the back of your hand if you want a palette cleanser in between scents.
Need a little help streamlining your picks? Head outside for another round of smelling your shortlisted scents. As it turns out, sniffing them indoors and outdoors makes a difference!
What’s your signature scent?
Once you have your final two, it’s time to concoct the perfect fragrance formula. Each bottle is 30ml, so you’ll have to decide on your desired scent ratio. Or, leave it to the experts, who are more than happy to recommend the ideal formula for you.
Once the formula is sorted, add each scent into your perfume bottle and test drive your signature spritz. Tweaks can still be made at this point, so feel free to get help from the pros at the store.
Pleased with your creation? The final step is to design your bottle! You can choose between printing an image on it or labelling it with the name of your scent. (If you’re out of ideas, just put your initials on it, we say.)

Bagging a luxury scent is all well and good, but it gets even better when you hear that your signature scent is sustainable, cruelty-free and all-natural.
