OTT burgers and a stellar selection of drinks is why Seven & Ate should be on your radar
Sometimes all we need is some comfort food, and Seven & Ate is all about satisfying those cravings. You might already know this joint in Jalan Besar, but the team has just revamped the menu and transformed its offering from tapas to OTT burgers, milkshakes, and craft beers. You can count us in.
The lyrics of Karma Chameleon echo through the dimly lit space; beer kegs are strategically littered around, and a Grease poster of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John lays in the far end. One thing’s for sure, this cosy enclave sure oozes its own charm.
Talk all you want about the interior of a restaurant, but if the food’s sub-standard, even Taj Mahal decoration ain’t gonna bail you out. When it comes to the dishes, Seven & Ate nails it.
If you only have space for one thing on the list, we recommend you go for the scotched quail eggs. There’s a reason why it’s one of the only dishes still on the menu after the makeover (tip: don’t skimp on the sriracha mayo). Of course, let’s not discount the mains. It may be pork, pork and more pork with these burgers but you won’t be missing the beef one bit. We tried the famous 3 Little Pigs and Jam & Eggs. Served with a generous portion of nachos, these burgers were decadent, flavourful, and a pure medley of goodness which just got better with every bite. But let’s take a moment to talk about the slow cooked pork belly in the 3 Little Pigs: Oily, tender and bursting with flavour, it should be a dish by itself.
Okay, okay. Let’s get to the important stuff, the drinks. Darren, one of the three owners, boldly proclaims that his goal is to have 78 different types of craft beer as a way of paying homage to the restaurant’s name. But for now, Seven & Ate’s selection of 25 craft beers on the counter already looks like the Great Wall of China, and you can safely assume you’re not gonna have just one (trust us, we’re speaking from experience).
If you’re facing choice paralysis, kick off your night with one of the Gosnells. A product of London, its honey flavour will be a perfect pairing to the grubby food. Oh, and don’t forget to crack open your cold one using the wall-mounted bottle openers!
Alcohol-resistant folks, you need not worry, the milkshakes don’t lose to the beers here. The only downside is that the flavours change from day to day, so it’s really the luck of the draw. We might have gotten the shorter end of the stick with the maple candied bacon milkshake, which was a little too sweet for our liking and the bacon more a gimmick than anything else. But still, props for the invention.
If you want to stake your claim as a serious comfort food join, all you need is a simple yet delish menu, a wicked selection of beer, and of course, good vibes all around. Seven & Ate pressed all our buttons on this front. We’ll be back when the next craving hits.
