Before you say “ain’t nobody got time for that”, think again, honey. We foresee lots of hours spent at home. ‘Cos, you know, social distancing.
So you’ve been up to date with Instagram, caught everything on your binge-watch list, got your quarantine playlist down pat and read all things related to Covid-19 and social distancing. Itching to do something else? How about giving your abode a little pick-me-up? You are spending the bulk of your time at home anyway. Roll up your sleeves as we’ve got easy-peasy ideas such as scent switches and more time-consuming activities like creating a photo wall or rearranging furniture. Let’s get down to business!
Marie Kondo’s got your back (again)
It’s hard to recall a time before all the Covid-19 ruckus, but remember when the words, “spark joy” were all the rage? It’s time to Kondo it up and declutter like a boss. After all, it’s a great way to kill time, create peace at home and allow that positive energy to flow right in. Oh, and while you’re at it, you can donate preloved items to these charities. After you’ve sanitised them, of course.
Change the mood with light
It’s amazing how the lighting at home can drastically change from productive home office to virtual party for one in just a few switches. We all know the three basics: Ambient or general lighting that lights the room uniformly; task lighting for specific activities like reading and using your laptop, and accent lighting that adds drama to the room.
Of course, we’re not telling you to change your track or cove lighting but feel free to play around with table and floor lamps. You could also get a cool lamp shade or smart lighting to change from warm to cold hues with a remote control or app.
Bring the outdoors in
We get it. It’s a tough time for outdoorsy people. So why not add a splash of greenery at home? You can go from something as simple as a terrarium to lush indoor plants to cultivate your green thumb. Hey, even a vase filled with beautiful blooms or rattan home accessories will do the trick.
Keepin’ it fresh
The scent of the room can drastically change your mood, which is why we’re all for aromatherapy, room diffusers, essential oils and candles that smell like a dream. Opt for mood-boosting citrusy scents to uplift spirits or calming lavender to wind down.
Rearrange the room
You might need some muscle for this but hey, at least you can skip a home workout. Move around the furniture by shifting your bed, couch or vanity area to clear up some space for a yoga sesh, a makeshift fort (whether you have kids or not) or a cosy reading nook. The options are endless.
Look through bookmarks and add to cart
Have you been sitting on that quirky (but totally unnecessary) cushion for ages? How about changing the theme of your room altogether? Whether you’re looking for an accented piece to pimp up the room, a rug to keep things cosy or ridiculously adorable and cheeky kitchenware, now’s the time to knock your socks out. You’ll be spending a lot of time at home so why not zhoosh it up a little? For starters, you can scroll through this fab list of online furniture and homeware stores. Or, try an AR-powered shopping app by Castlery for a virtual studio experience!
Deck out your wall
This is a fun one. Instead of staring at a blank wall, add some spunk by throwing on cool wallpaper – think statement palm leaves, florals, stripes, textures, motifs or a subtle design if change is not your best friend. Hang gorgeous wall art or even a photo wall filled with personal photographs, memories or that stunning piece you found at the local flea market. Creating a photo wall display will take up time (you’ll need patience and organisational skills) – but if you’re up for a challenge, now’s the best time to embark on the project.
