Prep for some fun in the sun, complete with gourmet picnic goodies, fine wine, the best locations, and the hottest Summer styles
Admit it. We’ve all whined about Singapore’s relentlessly hot weather at some point, but let’s be a little positive! Perpetually sunny weather and azure blue skies are the perfect excuse to pack up that picnic basket and spend a lazy day in the park. But, before you slip into that sundress and slap on the sunscreen, make sure you’ve got all the odds and sods you need for the perfect picnic.
Stock up on gourmet groceries… or order in
Half the enjoyment of a good picnic is tucking into some hearty homemade food, so make sure you sort out your grocery situation well in advance. We’ve lined up a whole list of cheese stores, delicatessens and butchers, international grocers (for regional rarities), and even some traditional wet markets so you’ll have no trouble finding exactly what you need. You can even do your grocery shopping online! If that still proves too much of a fuss (lazy bums!) order in beforehand with the help of gourmet delivery services like Caterspot, Deliveroo, and new kid on the block, Ubereats. Once you’ve got your groceries, assemble some fuss-free sarnies or put together a cheese platter that you can pair with a couple of glasses of wine. Speaking of wine…
Get your boozy bevvies in
We can’t forget another vital part of picnic planning – alcohol! Treat yourself and skip the bottom shelf bevvies in favour of quality pours of scotch, gin, and vodka, or if you prefer, craft beer and fine wine. You won’t find these at chain supermarkets, so head down to these bottle shops instead or simply order in via this handy app. Best part? If you run out of booze mid-picnic, they’ll deliver right to your picnic spot! Just make sure not to run foul of Singapore’s public liquor laws and drink responsibly.
Keep it cool!
Food and drinks? Check! Those are the major things to remember, but don’t forget the other summery essentials. Nothing sullies a sunny day out like a nasty spot of sunburn. Make sure your summer skincare kit is well equipped with our team’s tried-and-tested guide to keeping your skin looking fab in the heat and humidity.
What to bring?
Being outdoors doesn’t mean skimping on a classy experience. If you’ve got good wine, it’s well worth packing a couple of wine glasses (because nobody wants to be seen drinking wine out of a plastic cup!). While picnics are all about being at one with nature, we’re a tech savvy bunch and always make sure we’ve got portable speakers and a power bank handy (so we can Snapchat and Instagram away indefinitely). For when you seriously want to kick back and relax, consider packing a free-standing hammock from Airmocks. You won’t need to fret over finding suitably spaced trees thanks to the integrated foldable frame.
Dress to impress
Don’t let the heat dictate your fashion sense. Boys, take note of our heat-beating edition of The Edit, while ladies should check out our resort wear guide for looks that’ll stun at any beach picnic. And, to keep the sun at bay, pick up a stylish pair of cheap sunnies or take the opportunity to don your favourite sunhat.
Location, location, location
Last and certainly not least, you’ve got to pick the perfect picnic location. If you’re feeling a classic picnic surrounded by greenery, scroll down to the parks section of our green spaces guide or take in the sun, sand, and surf at Sentosa’s beautiful white sand beaches.
