Singapore’s famous shophouse hotel will be closing in June 2017… So book a room and take plenty of photos at the affordable and artsy New Majestic Hotel in Chinatown before it’s too late
We’re all familiar with Singapore’s constant and rapid skyline transformations, especially when the places we’ve grown to love suddenly disappear, so nostalgia is inevitable. Unfortunately, as heartbreaking as it sounds, another iconic piece of architecture will be bidding us farewell. The New Majestic Hotel is an exemplar of Singapore’s particular style of boutique hotels that have been formed out of an older building that originally had a different use, and will be closing its doors after 11 years. If you haven’t experienced this (literally) majestic building, don’t worry; you can still book a room prior to its official closing date on 1 June 2017.
You know the saying: ‘Good things die young’. The New Majestic Hotel was only created by combining four shophouses and opened in 2006 at Bukit Pasoh Road. Relatively young, it’s a favourite amongst fellow locals and tourists alike for its quirky interior and the convenience of its location. Right in the heart of Chinatown, places like the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum as well as Chinatown Street Market are within walking distance from the hotel.
When we say quirky, we mean beds hanging from the ceilings and bathtubs sitting right smack in the middle of the room. But don’t get us wrong; still as grand and majestic as its namesake, the concept is a mixture of modern, vintage and traditional elements with a hint of surrealism, making it a stand-out hotel. There are five personalised rooms to choose from – catering to whatever you fancy, be it something more traditional, minimalistic, or even fashionable. If you’d love to stay a night at ‘Singapore’s first design hotel’, rooms start from $196, and if you’re looking for a bargain, check out its hottest promos.
The iconic building will begin its transformation after 1 June 2017, and will reopen in 2018 with a new name: Straits Clan. The new building will host restaurants, bars and other facilities. Whether or not Straits Clan will be the next New Majestic Hotel with rooms that are out of this world; well, guess we’ll have to wait and see.
If you carry fond memories of this beautiful hotel, a Memory Wall will be set up in its lobby for you to spread the love and write down your thoughts from 28 April to 20 May 2017.
