New Cafes in Singapore
There is cafes, and then there is really good cafes…. With new cafes popping up in far flung (read: quaint and sleepy) streets, the café revolution is alive and kicking – and we couldn’t be more chuffed!
Necessary Provisions
Dubbed “the new life to the neighbourhood,” this Necessary Provisions could be the pick-me-up that Eng Kong needs. Their Western menu speaks to the hearts of the hungry and drained: pasta, sandwiches with Caesar salad, and breakfast like Banana Nutella Panini. Necessary Provisions provides for the Asian palate, too – pick up Sambal Fried Rice or Buta Don! PS. This one’s a real looker and is already gaining great Insta-traction, so hurry down to beat the hipsters at their game.
Necessary Provisions, 21 Eng Kong Terrace, Singapore 598993, p. 9231 7920, Open Tue-Thu 10am-10pm, Fri 10am-12am, Sat 9am-12am, Sun 9am-6pm.
Sinpopo BRAND
The leaf has turned– it’s hard to believe that Sinpopo was once the name of an infamous nightclub in Tanjong Katong. Walk in and be comforted by old school charms – this eatery is like a time machine that will take you back to the 1950s. They have it all: tin boxes, metal grilles, and even a vintage television set! Pick up a menu and relive those days – take your pick from hot and cold desserts, or mark your experience with a local fave, “scissor cut” rice. A must visit in our books.
Sinpopo BRAND, 458 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427671, p. 6345 5034, Open Sun-Thu 12pm-10pm, Fri-Sat/PH Eve 12pm-12am.
Maple & Market
Maple & Market is always catching us off guard with new additions to the menu. On the growing list of surprises: Papa’s Beer, the manliest cake around with Guinness Stout and choco ganache; Papa’s Kopi, and maple and bacon shortcakes. Sweet treats better in small doses? Opt for the cookies and pastries instead. Maple & Market also conducts classes on how to make your own sweet treats.
Maple & Market, 34 Cassia Crescent, #01-82, Singapore 390034, p. 6348 8068. Open Mon 12pm-10pm, Wed-Fri 12pm-10pm, Sat-Sun 10am-10pm.
The Coffee Shot
True to its name, The Coffee Shot takes coffee very, very seriously. Drop by for the usual solos or doppios, lattes, and cappuccinos, but we recommend the specialty Rome Holiday and honey-infused coffee. This cozy café in the Jalan Besar hood also serves up local coffee for those who prefer the good ol’ kopi. Fill up with a Green Banana Cake – you probably won’t get this anywhere else.
The Coffee Shot, 103 Lavender Street, Singapore 338725, p. 6299 5909, Open Tue-Sat 11am-11pm, Sun 8am-8pm.
Department of Caffeine
Looking for that perfect cuppa to get you through the day? Score at Department of Caffeine, also fondly known as D.O.C. We brought up these transformers (they switch up their menu regularly) earlier this month but we just can’t get enough. With spanking new Aeropress and Handybrew machines and new brews on hand, you know this department’s the right fit for you. Feeling hungry? Weekend brunch is available.
Department of Caffeine, 15 Duxton Road, Singapore 089481, p. 6223 3426, Open Mon-Fri 1030am-730pm, Sat-Sun 930am-730pm.
W39
Talk about delish – take your pick from a Hearty Breakfast, Braised Lamb Shank, or Seared Tuna (topped with avo salsa, soy glaze, wasabi mayo, and trout caviar) over at W39. Better yet, your four-legged friends can join you on this one – W39 is totally pet friendly, so bring Neko with you! Read our first take on W39 before you head there.
