Everything you need to know about the gig that all hipsters have been waiting for – line-up, tickets, food and drink stalls and more
UPDATE: Here’s our guide to Laneway Festival 2017
Can you feel it? The buzz is brewing as we inch closer and closer towards one of the biggest indie music festivals in the region – none other than the hipster-lauded St. Jerome’s Laneway Festival. Whether you’re a seasoned trooper who’s gone for all five editions of the Melbourne-imported spectacle, or a Laneway virgin who’s only recently stumbled upon this treasure cove of alternative music, there’s absolutely no harm in getting re-acquainted with all the festive deets. Heads-up!
The Acts
The Laneway organisers made fans weep with the abrupt cancellation of balladeering pianist, Tobias Jesso Jr. (apparently due to clashing commitments with his recording obligations). But making up for it in a huge way, they filled the gap by announcing the addition of indie-pop mavericks, The 1975. Them aside, here are all the other musicians performing at Laneway.
The amped-up rockers: Battles, Cashew Chemists, Cheats, GDJYB, Metz, Violent Soho
The dreamy soundscapers: Beach House, Big Scary, DIIV, East India Youth
The synth idols: Chvrches, Grimes, Purity Ring, Riot !n Magenta
The soul quenchers: Shamir, The Internet, Thundercat
The bop-worthy producers: Flume, Hermitude, Hudson Mohawke, Intriguant
UPDATE: Laneway Singapore has officially announced the timings of all performing acts! What’s also revealed is the debut of a fourth stage (we hear the White Room has air-con!) co-curated by homegrown label Syndicate, featuring the elites of SG’s hip-hop and bass scene with peeps like Fauxe, Mean and Kiat. Plan proper with the schedule below.
The Passes
Unless you’ve already gotten your mitts on these golden tickets, it’s still not too late to snag some! Going solo? Buy a standard ticket worth $180. Or prefer to go as a gang of six? Round up your mates, and purchase a group bundle of six tickets worth $999 – that’s a discounted price of $166.50 per person!
But say you’re flying in from the region and your Laneway plans are being bogged down by accommodation woes; Laneway’s got some packages that will have you settled. For $258 per person, you can get a two-night stay at Rucksack Inn (Lavender Street or Hong Kong Street) in one Quad Room (sharing for four people); complete with four Laneway tickets. $307 per person covers three tickets and one Triple Room (sharing for three people), and $358 per person covers two tickets and one Double/Twin Room (sharing for two people).
If you wanna up your abode to a chic boutique hotel, $445.75 gets you a two-night stay at Big Hotel Singapore. This package includes a Superior Room (sharing for two people), complimentary breakfast, and two Laneway tickets. But for the luxurious sorts, you can also check into Carlton Hotel Singapore for $520 – two-night stay for two guests, along with two Laneway passes.
All packages include Laneway tickets and return airport-hotel transfers.
The Rules
DO
- Treat your ticket like the Holy Grail: Do not lose it, ’cos all lost tickets will not be replaced. Also, tickets will not be sold on event day.
- Bring an acceptable form of ID for entry: This applies even if you’re not intending to buy any booze!
- Arrive early: Gates open at 10am, and do bear in mind (this is really important), re-entry into the premises is not allowed.
- Bring cash or your credit card with you: Unlike Burning Man, you do need proper currency to purchase goods on-site. Sorry, trading isn’t allowed.
- Dress comfortably: It’s a long day ahead, so wear trusty shoes and reliable threads that won’t get in your way! And just sayin’, flower crowns and Native American headdresses are super passé.
DON’T
- Bring prohibited beverages: Only unsealed, empty plastic bottles will be allowed into the event, so you can quench your thirst at the water stations anytime. And obviously, this isn’t a BYOB party, so no outside alcohol allowed.
- Try to be a photographing party-pooper: Taking pics is fine, but try not to get in everyone’s way, aight? To prevent any unnecessary scrums, Laneway is banning all monopods, tripods, selfie sticks, and professional cameras with removable lenses (small still cameras are fine).
- Bring any foldable chairs: If you have to rest your legs, just bring a picnic mat and sprawl yourself on the grass.
- Bring any umbrellas: The Laneway team doesn’t want you blocking viewers with your giant canopy; use a poncho instead. Besides, rain won’t kill you!
- Set up your own banquet: Outside food isn’t allowed either. But don’t worry about starving; we whet your appetite with Laneway’s extensive f&b selection in our next section…
The Refreshments
A hearty reward for all those hours of moshing and dancing, the abundance of food and drink choices available at Laneway is astounding. Save yourself the stall-hopping trying to see where’s selling what; we present to you what’s cooking in the kitchen.
