Step into KOMA to be transported to another world. And trust us, this space is a must-see.
Fancy travelling to a one-of-a-kind version of Japan… right here in Singapore? Say hello to KOMA, a modern Japanese restaurant and sushi bar, unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
Where were we, really?
This new concept by Marina Bay Sands and Tao Group opened doors in July 2019. Team Honeycombers got a first look at KOMA and we all came to the same conclusion: The place is so striking, it looks more like a movie set than a restaurant.
We absolutely love this beaut of a restaurant that pays homage to traditional elements of Japanese culture and decor. Think bright orange gates at the entrance that resemble those of the Fushimi Inari Shrine (no prizes for guessing where’s the crowd-favourite photo op here); or the glass owls lining the bar (and perched on the suspended grids on the ceiling – look up!), that represent wisdom, luck, and fortune.
Here’s the jaw-dropper: You can’t miss the giant 2.5-metre bell with its many faces (20 to be exact), positioned as the centrepiece of the space. It’s a stunning backdrop for the bar counter and is right by the footbridge built over a reflecting pool. The setting feels all the more dramatic with intimate mood lighting, and we’re all for this mysterious vibe that transports us to another world.
Expecting (or planning) a party? Reserve the private dining area at the mezzanine level for a private space and a gorgeous view of the sprawling restaurant!
Japanese cuisine gets a creative spin
Executive Chef Kunihiro Moroi weaves magic with his modern interpretation of Japanese cuisine. On the menu, you’ll find everything from sushi and sashimi, to robatayaki and tempura.
Looking for something unique? The chef has multiple original dishes too. For starters, the Salmon Pillow is hella addictive. Bite into this puff pastry and the smoked avocado spills out, accompanied by the subtle savouriness of the salmon sashimi sitting atop the shell. A moment later, the burnt jalapeno kicks in with a hint of heat to end things on a spicy high.
Or, have your sashimi in a taco: The Taro Chip Tuna Tacos were snapped up in a flash at our table. These were served in a neat row that gave us a view of the perfectly plated ingredients, a vibrant combination of tuna, mashed avocado, jalapeno and cilantro. The texture of the succulent sashimi went amazingly well with the crunch of the taco, creating a delectable combination that we’ll crave for sure.
Another dish that’s bound to be a hit with seafood fans is the Lobster Salad. This sharing plate has more than just lobster – expect uni (sea urchin), caviar, and scallops too. Have them on their own, or dip them into the sauce on the side that’s made with coconut, chives and lime. If you didn’t think raw seafood would go with anything other than wasabi and soy sauce, this dish is here to prove you wrong. The creaminess of the coconut complemented the flavours of the sea, while the lime cut through this combination with just the right amount of citrus zest, making it a satiating yet light mouthful.
Need a night out itinerary?
KOMA is also the perfect pre-drinks spot before hitting up the parties! The full dining menu is available at the bar, so feel free to order more than just canapes to go with your tipple.
Speaking of drinks, their house concoctions are a must-try. We thoroughly enjoyed the signature KOMA Canary, a refreshing cocktail served out of a glass canary, made with Hendrick’s gin, saffron syrup and lemon. Our crew of floral-loving folks were stoked by the strong saffron notes that opened every sip, balanced out by the citrus and ending with the warmth from the gin.
For dash of local flavours, try Dust of Stars, a cachaca and Frangelico-based creation featuring gula Melaka and pandan earl grey. This one-of-a-kind combination left us wanting more, and it comes topped with a white foam cloud and gold cereal flakes to boot!
