Dial up the quirk with Ikea’s ugly-chic line Foremal (their words, not ours). Pencil in 20 September for the launch of this limited edition, online-only collection.
Most of us can recognise an Ikea piece from a mile away. Its clean-lined, super functional and has ‘Scandi’ written all over it. Right? You’d be 100 percent on point if it wasn’t for this disruptive, un-Ikea-like collection that throws Scandinavian minimalism out the window. Enter maximalism –Foremal is OTT, it’s pretty + ugly (their words, not ours) and we’re itching to get our stubby little hands on them. The limited edition collection dropped on 20 September but it’ll be available online-only and still stocks last. You snooze, you lose.

The man behind this line is acclaimed Swedish glass and ceramic artist Per B Sundberg whose absurd humour informs all his work. Expect a whole lotta quirk – skulls, bananas, poodles, mushrooms and other wack-a-doodle motifs.

That shiny silver poodle-shaped candle holder is kooky-cool, much like the coronated skull planter that you can give Psycho Bob hair (Simpson’s reference ICYMI) with the right plant. Crazy plant ladies, look this way. There are some two-timers in the collection as well as a tray with a candle stand for… midnight snacking (?).

The soft furnishings and storage boxes are printed with kaleidoscopes patterns and coffee stains that’ll make you stare. They’re comical, crazy and most certainly collectables. It’s an Ikea decor collab unlike anything we’ve ever seen, and honestly, we like that this shift comes in time for this iconic brand’s 75th anniversary.

You can count on these oddball pieces to be major convo-starters, but more importantly, they’re a declaration that says “I’m not vanilla”. If you ask us, it’s ridiculously ugly-chic like the outfits worn by your weird/rebellious friend who doesn’t give a sh*t and you totally secretly admire… or like all things Prada. Let the freak flag high.
