Speciality coffee, heaps of scrambled eggs and all kinds of jaffles are making an appearance in the quaintest cafes around town.
Cafe-hoppers and breakfast bingers, we’ve found the newest (and nicest) places to hit up on your next run. This edition of Hot New Cafes is spilling with speciality coffee, bready indulgences and the return of a cupcakery in the CBD where happiness is served with frosting.
When a new Melbourne inspired cafe with a name that sounds like a character from Hugh Jackman’s The Greatest Showman shows up on Craig Rd, you gotta take note. There ain’t no pretence – spot the bicycle, follow the scent of coffee and plop down on a pastel pink seat. You know you’ll be served a helluva cuppa ‘cos one of the founders won the Singapore National Barista Championship in 2016. Order the Ethiopian cold brew that comes in a hip flask and go for that heap of spiced scrambled eggs topped with grilled mushrooms, dehydrated tomatoes and fried kale.

Plain Vanilla Bakery
Now that Plain Vanilla Bakery is opening shop down the road from the Honeycombers HQ, chances are you might find us there more than in our actual office. Filling the gaping hole on Telok Ayer Street where Shop Wonderland used to be, PVB is the place to go to secretly cheat on your diet on good and not-so-good days. ‘Cos there’s nothing a good cuppa coffee, a chunky cupcake and Wonderland Botanical’s dreamy bouquets can’t fix. They’re soft launching on Saturday, 29 September.

Dusty pink walls, warm wooden tables and beautiful potted plants are all kinds of #InstaGood. Swing by this lovely cafe in Serangoon when all you really want is to eat a bunch of jaffles and spread FOMO far and wide. We’ve got eyes for Pablo’s beef iron-toasted sandwiches with minced beef, capsicum and mozzarella and the corned beef version with the purplest mash we’ve ever seen! But first coffee… find the perfect light drenched perch in this cafe and sip slowly for full effect.

We know a good caffeine hit when we see (and feel) one. If you’re hanging around Katong and Joo Chiat itching for a badass bagel and a mood-altering speciality coffee, Homeground is where it’s at. We keep going back to this simply decorated cafe for the chocolately, nutty Vanta roast and this massive breakfast bagel loaded with bacon, egg, hash brown, bratwurst and Sriracha mayo. Because we’re extra like that.
Homeground, 475 Joo Chiat Rd, Singapore 427682
Halcyon & Crane
The good folks behind Birds of a Feather on Amoy Street have launched their newest cafe and bar. As you can tell, this laid-back yet stylish cafe-style place is named after two birds – the calm Greek kingfisher and the peaceful Asian crane. Whaddya get there? A lovely blend of East and West with Sichuan flavours that you won’t see coming. Head down for coffee, healthy brekkie, all-day light salads and meals, sandwiches and such.
Halcyon & Crane, 290 Orchard Road, The Paragon #03-09, Singapore 238859
