In this month’s edition of Hot New Cafes: a health food lounge in a swanky membership club, freshly baked pastries, and a chocolate cafe
Topping our list of #firstworldpriorities? The hunt for the best brunch spots in town.Yes we take our coffee and cafes seriously, and no we’re not ashamed. For June’s Hot New Cafes, we’ve got a couple of exciting ones in store, including the opening of a chocolate cafe in Orchard, a swanky health lounge and Forty Hands new east outlet.

Clan Cafe
Located on the ground floor of Straits Clan (the exclusive club for creative movers and shakers) is Clan Cafe: an all-day lounge that’s about good living. It’s all about nourishing your soul here; the menu’s laden with herbal tea brews developed to calm ailments, grain bowls packed full of fresh produce, and hearty broths. Of course, it helps that the space is good-looking; with soothing jade green being the central colour palette, and a botanical mural setting the beautiful backdrop for a chill afternoon.
Clan Cafe, Straits Clan, 31-37 Bukit Pasoh Road, Singapore 089845.

Mother Dough Bakery
Hot on the heels of halal bakeries in the Kampong Glam vicinity is Mother Dough Bakery. Founder Naadhira honed her craft in New York City – it was in a Brooklyn bakery that she studied the process and rhythms of slow fermentation. Here’s what’s in store: buttery almond croissants, lemon cakes with a tangy sugar glaze, dark and milk chocolate milk cookies, as well as a delectable chocolate cake topped with a dark chocolate ganache, chocolate pearls and sea salt.
Mother Dough Bakery, 749 North Bridge Rd, Singapore #01-01, Singapore 198717
Chix Hot Chicken
Opened by former Singapore Idol Taufik Batisah, Chix Hot Chicken is all about its namesake: Nashville hot chicken fried in the spiciest of peppers. Take your pick from quarter, half or three whole wings, with heat levels from mild to insane. Can’t take the heat? Chow down on buttermilk fried chicken, marinated in a New Orleans style soul spice.
Chix Hot Chicken, 1 Jalan Pisang, #01-01, Singapore 199069

Forty Hands
Great news for Easties: you can now get yourself a slice of Tiong Bahru’s laidback vibes without leaving your neighbourhood. As one of the pioneers of the coffee movement in Singapore, you can expect nothing but top-notch brews here. Kick your Saturday morning off with a cup and a smashed avo on toast or chilli scram, before taking it slow, exploring the ‘hood’s icons of pastel-coloured shophouses.
Forty Hands, 226 East Coast Road, Singapore 428923

The Dark Gallery
Loco for cocoa? The Dark Gallery is for you. The menu runs the whole gamut of everything dark chocolate-related including luscious chocolate cake, pastries, bon bons and pure Valrhona chocolate drinks and ice cream. Its new location in Ngee Ann City spells convenience for those looking for a quick chocolate hit.
The Dark Gallery, Ngee Ann City, 391 Orchard Road, Unit #B2-29 Takashimaya Shopping Centre

Twenty Eight Cafe
New to the Wilkie neighbourhood is Twenty Eight Cafe: a breezy plant-packed spot with plenty of power sockets if you’re making this your coffice. The menu has far more than your usual brunch suspects; expect hearty burgers (loaded with balsamic onion, avocado, bacon, and truffle mayo no less), eggs benny served with potato hash, as well as cold truffle pastas.
Twenty Eight Cafe, 28 Wilkie Road, #01-06, Singapore 228051
