In this month's edition of Hot New Cafes: Santap, Lady M JW Marriott South Beach, Lunar Coffee Brewers and more.
The year is more than half over (how time flies!) and the cafe scene in Singapore looks unlikely to slow down. As brunch- and coffee-sipping people, we see it as our civic duty to scour the island every month for the hottest new cafe openings. From a healthy Halal food joint to an elegant dessert pattiserie, here are this month’s Hot New Cafes.
Santap
Meaning “to eat” in Malay, Santap is a healthy new addition to the thriving Halal cafe scene. Its menu features clean eats of rice bowls – these are made with cauliflower florets and whole-grain brown rice, and topped with alfalfa, red daikon and spinach – with options of salmon, beef, shrimp and portobello. Other must-eats include wholesome vegetarian pizzas, sandwiches served with papadums and delectable brunch delights like Banana Nut Crunch with P&J. Best of all, all of its food are made with fresh produce sourced from the local market at nearby Madras Street.
Santap, The Daulat Hotel, 16 Madras Street, Singapore 208413
Lady M
Brace yourselves for happy tiers, cake fans – you now have a new locale for your girly tête-à-tête. Elegant dessert patisserie, Lady M, is up and running at JW Marriott South Beach. Famed for its elegant decor and sophisticated mille crepes, this new location suits the cafe to a tea; Lady M’s typically clean, ivory aesthetic juxtaposes brilliantly with the hotel’s architecturally stunning design. Trust us, a visit here will make for one heck of an afternoon of gaping and ‘gramming. Don’t forget to order up a slice of the Earl Grey Mille Crêpes Cake – it’s unique to the cafe, and features an exquisite combination of earl grey tea and light cream in between 20 paper-thin, handmade crêpes, drizzled with a tea glaze, Earl Grey tea leaves, and edible blue cornflowers.
Lady M, JW Marriott South Beach, 30 Beach Road, Singapore 189763.
Bourbon Street Po Boys Tea & Coffee
Once a whisky-and New Orleans-focused bar, Bourbon Street Po Boys Tea & Coffee has revamped itself with a new menu to cater to daytime crowds. While you can pick up po boy sandwiches like the pulled pork, blackened chicken, and the classic roasted shrimp, it’s the new Goth Latte that’s got us curious. It’s an opaque black coffee drink that features activated charcoal for its sinister looks, along with a secret ingredient. And if you’re not a caffeine fiend, you can still flaunt your Goth inclinations with a mason jar of their Black Lemonade.
Bourbon Street Po Boys Tea & Coffee, 46 Club Street, Singapore 069423. p. 6221 4772. Open weekdays 8am-late (bar opens from 5pm).
Lunar Coffee Brewers
Downtown Gallery is where all the food action‘s at these days, and joining the scene is Lunar Coffee Brewers. Think hearty fusion rice bowls with bags of flavour, like the Korean-style gochujang chicken don topped with mozzarella cheese. Plenty of options also await for your caffeine fix; aside from your usual coffees, the cafe also serves up cold brews and foamy milk teas.
Lunar Coffee Brewers, 6 Shenton Way, 01-49 OUE Downtown Gallery 2, Singapore 068809
Aloha Poke Bugis
If you love poke but mourn its absence outside of the CBD, you have reason to rejoice now – Aloha Poke is now available at Bugis Junction. Expect the usual fare of flavourful bowls, filled with fresh greens, white or brown rice, with options of sashimi-grade tuna or salmon offered in three flavours of Original, Wasabi Mayo and Spicy; then finished with superfoods.
