As Singapore marks the bicentennial year of Sir Stamford Raffles’ founding, the question of how we see ourselves as a nation is brought to fore more prominently, provoking a re-evaluation of the narratives we create to project ourselves to others now and in the future.
In The Golden Record 3.0, award-winning theatre writer and director, Edith Podesta builds a deeper exploration of the quote, which was in the script from The Golden Record 2.0, from Cultural Medallion Recipient and NUS Indian Dance Artistic Director, Mrs Santha Bhaskar. This quote was engraved on a ‘mini golden record’ and was successfully launched to space on SpooQY-1 satellite by our partner, the Centre for Quantum Technologies.
Directed in verbatim theatre style, this iteration features Mrs Bhaskar herself as a dancer embodying art, religion and emotions. alongside a student actress from NUS Stage, representing Mrs Bhaskar in the past. In their interplay, they remind their audience of the deep entanglement that all of us find ourselves in, as part of a multi-racial and multi-cultural Singapore. The journey of identity creation is already manifested in these interactions now, and for this reason, the importance of harmony in diversity, is what we must share, regardless of time and space.
