“How sweet the moonlight sleeps upon this bank!
Here will we sit, and let the sounds of music
Creep in our ears: soft stillness and the night
Become the touches of sweet harmony.”
The Merchant of Venice (Shakespeare)
The Phoenix Ensemble Singapore explores the musical legacy of great literary figures, presenting fresh and exciting programs of music and spoken word.
This inaugural concert features the poetry and songs of William Shakespeare performed by seasoned musicians and performers Katherine Wallace (soprano), Reuben Lai (tenor), Mary Ann Tear (reader) and Pauline Lee (piano).
From the madrigals of the 16th Century to the musicals of the 21st, Shakespeare continues to inspire composers to find new ways of expressing the depths of the human condition.
