The nature of representation is challenged and turned on its head, through relief and sculptural works that cast a curious aesthetic experience that is uniquely Hendrian. In this exhibition, “SANS” (literally understood as without) describes an absence of representation. Hendrian’s works consistently trace back to his interest in the Bauhaus’ approach and method, valuing efficient, logical and utilitarian modes of thinking. These eccentrically coloured and painstakingly constructed works reflect the artist’s ethos, drawing the viewer into a peculiar imaginary space, releasing the trained eye from the rules of representation into a state of perceptual ‘tabula rasa’.
