“Don! Don! Don! Don ki!” If this catchphrase makes sense to you, then you’re already a fan of this retail giant of cheap goods that's coming your way
A feast at a yakitori restaurant in Shinjuku, hunting for rare gadgets in Akihabara, shopping for the hippest clothes in Harajuku – all must-do highlights of anyone’s Tokyo trip, I’m sure. But do you know what’s one thing I must always strike off my Tokyo itinerary? It’s getting lost in the retail maze that is Don Quijote, and it’s not just because of its catchy-as-hell theme song.
Buzzing on every Nipponophile’s radar now is the announcement of Don Quijote coming to the Orchard area in Singapore, the Japanese discount store’s only Southeast Asian destination. I’m not exaggerating when I say you’ll find everything here – Japanese snacks, homeware, electronics, stationery, accessories, weird party costumes; you name it, they probably have it. And the best part? Everything here is dirt cheap.
Don Quijote’s incoming entry into Singapore’s shopping scene will certainly rival other low-price retail chains like Daiso, so we’re intrigued to see if “Donki” takes off as successfully as it has in Japan.
Oh, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself spending hours in here.
