Whether you’re itching to become fluent in Bahasa Indonesia, Mandarin Chinese, English or Korean, Crystal Learning has special teaching methods to make it happen.
Candy Soepratsono learnt Bahasa Indonesia in Indonesia, Mandarin Chinese in Malaysia and English in Australia. Then, she moved to Singapore and set up Crystal Learning, a language school that helps adults pick up new languages, which also helps expats integrate into new communities.
Been there, done that
One of the biggest reasons why Crystal Learning has a track record of success stories is because the proprietary materials they use are created based on Candy’s journey. With self-created study materials, she had mastered English and Mandarin on her own. Now, the centre uses her notes and techniques to teach their students too.
Candy shares, “I grew up in Indonesia, and while I’m Chinese, my native language is Bahasa Indonesia. When I first came to Malaysia, everyone assumed that I could speak Mandarin. So, to integrate into the Malaysian and Singaporean society, I had to learn Mandarin as soon as possible.
I tried a number of classes, but I found that many focused on obscure grammar rules instead of quickly building the ability to communicate. Learning Chinese, or any third language, is hard enough in itself and a strong emphasis on grammar rules alone only makes it harder.
Thus, I thought I could give language learners a better experience by teaching language skills you can use from day one.”
Similarly, Crystal Learning has also created its own book for learning Bahasa Indonesia, a product of the joint effort of students and trainers. The centre has now expanded to include classes for learning Korean, but at its core, the brand’s approach is the same – applying tried and tested materials and techniques that have helped students master a new language.
“We created the learning materials from scratch. And as we added other languages, we always started from the ground up by developing learning materials that are 100% relevant to our language learners,” Candy emphasises.
New to Singapore?
New to the country and plan to pick up Mandarin Chinese? Despite being perceived as a difficult language to master, Crystal Learning has made it easy for even those who are starting from scratch.
The conversational Mandarin course is both practical and effective, getting you to the point of speaking and understanding the language fast. Plus, the small class sizes make it less intimidating for you to speak up in class, and the centralised location means it’s easily accessible – whether you’re taking your classes after work or on casual weekends.
