You know we heart Singapore, but there’s no denying that Hong Kong is where it’s at when it comes to live music venues, boozy brunches and affordable massages; it really is the perfect weekend getaway spot. And our intel on the ground (AKA Honeycombers Hong Kong!) has shared some top secret information on where to get the tastiest Cantonese cuisine in the city, complete with epic views of that iconic skyline, and stellar service to match. Time to get booking those flights?
Above & Beyond knows good food
Cantonese cuisine is refined and elegant, two words befitting the general vibe at Above & Beyond, the fine dining restaurant located on the 28th floor of Hotel ICON in the Tsim Sha Tsui district of Hong Kong. Head on up to the top floor, and step into a welcoming and design-led interior that blends contemporary elements with traditional twists.
Then, all you have to do is settle in with your crew and take in the stunning views of the city as you peruse the menu that’s filled with a little something for everyone.
For vegans: Sichuan-style Kung Pao tofu
Above & Beyond deserves an applause for featuring an impressive range of vegan dishes that are both savoury and comforting. Seasoned with freshly chopped chilli and roasted cashews, the spicy Sichuan-style Kung Pao tofu delivers serious kick – and it’s best served with rice – so it warms you up and satisfies you quick. For those who aren’t fans of spicy food, the stir-fried mock chicken with sweet and sour sauce, paired with fresh pineapples and bell peppers is also pretty scrumptious.
For vegetarians: dim sum
If you’re in Hong Kong and you want some vegetarian dim sum in your life, then Above & Beyond has your name all over it! From the crispy spring rolls to the crystal-skinned dumplings filled with regional mushrooms and bamboo, expect vegetarian delights that let the ingredients do the talking.
Moreover, the friendly staff here are well versed in what lacto/ovo vegetarians can and can’t eat, so they’ll make ordering a breeze, without causing a fuss – what more could you ask for?
For carnivores: crispy skin chicken
We have six words: crispy skin chicken to die for. It is one of the restaurant’s signature dishes, and once you have tried it you will fully appreciate why. Served with a salt and pepper garnish and lemon juice, we have no idea how the chef gets the skin so crispy, with an ever-so-light layer of fat, and the most moist chicken I think we’ve ever tried.
We did sample some other dishes – namely the steamed lobster dumplings, steamed crab meat dumplings, and wok fried prawns – but the crispy skin chicken is reason alone to come here and indulge.
