The art of sound
This unique showcase is a sound-only presentation (the first of its kind for Sharma, who’s known for his use of different mediums and disciplines to create his works of art) that focuses on a tapestry of experiences, atmospheres, and sensations through a collection of songs by some of Southeast Asia’s remote cultures. From Kristang folk music of Malacca’s Portuguese Eurasians to the melodic repetitions of Arabic and Persian phonemes in Taranas by the Rohingya community, fidelity tells the stories of these people that live alongside all of us, hidden in plain sight.
Digging deep
To make fidelity a reality, Sharma conducted field research by documenting song recordings and collaborating with members of various cultures. The big idea? To bring you, the viewer (or listener, in the case of fidelity) closer to these little-known civilisations that make up our diverse human race.
“[With fidelity], I am looking at the possibility for a personal narrative in an aural encounter amidst a foreign landscape of languages and songs, and what it means to look for authentic experiences and be part of a changing, connected world,” explains Sharma.
Immerse yourself…
Intrigued? Admission is free, and it runs from 10.30am to 8pm from 17 May to 19 August 2018. There’s always something new happening at Aloft so be sure to keep up with what’s happening by checking out the Hermès website, or follow Fondation d’enterprise Hermès on Facebook.
Aloft at Hermès
One of the Fondation d’entreprise Hermès’ five art spaces around the world, Aloft is a platform for contemporary artists to explore new expressive forms and to bring their creative dreams to life through original works created in situ. Inhabiting the upper floor of the Hermès flagship store, Aloft takes over the baton from Third Floor – Hermès. This new chapter reaffirms the brand’s vision of offering the community a unique space at the heart of Orchard Road to encounter and fall in love with art.
