Yoga Studios in Jakarta
Bikram, Iyengar, Ashtanga – yoga studios in Jakarta are popping up all over the place and include all styles of yoga for the non-flexible to the almost-contortionists. Time to hit the mat and get your Zen on.
One of the most popular styles of yoga in Jakarta is Bikram or hot yoga. In these studios the room is heated to 42 degrees, while yogis perform a set routine of asana led by an instructor. It can be a pretty intense experience for those new to bikram, and successfully completing the class without leaving the room is one of the challenges. The sweaty work does pay off, with results from regular bikram practice including weight loss, more flexible limbs, stronger ligaments and joints, and getting your body to a healthy state of function through the release of toxins from the body.

Another popular style of yoga is Iyengar, which focuses on correct alignment of the body for each posture so that the body can be balanced and strong. Iyengar yoga is distinct from other forms of yoga because of its intense use of props to assist reaching each posture accurately. Iyengar studios such as the Iyengar Yoga Centre Indonesia come equipped with props such as blankets, blocks, straps, pillows, chairs, and bolsters.

Teachers at Jakarta Ashtanga Yoga Shala specialise in one of the traditional yoga styles, Ashtanga. Here, all the instructors follow this strong form of Hatha yoga that appeals to those who like to build strength in their body and mind. This yoga style is recognized for its strict sequence that is performed in each class. As yogis practicing Ashtanga become more proficient and learn the set sequence of asana, they can move onto Mysore style practice in which they are only guided by the instructor, rather than led pose by pose.
